Murky floodwater mixes with casteism: Dalits refused relief in Cuddalore

A survey reveals that around 90 % of the houses, livestock and crops destroyed in Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadubelong to the Dalits.

|8 December 2015

  • One of the reason for the acute damage is that the schedulecastes are mostly living either on the edge or close to the river on the low-lying areas.
  • The survey also reveals that in Kongarayanpalayam, people from the dominant caste blocked clean water access for the Dalits.

The world watched in awe last week as people in and outside  pulled out all the stops to help those affected by the worst rains to hit the state in a 100 years.

People opened the doors of their houses to strangers, shared food and supplies and went out of their way to rescue those stranded in the floods. However, while most of Tamil Nadu experienced these heartwarming scenes, the situation in Cuddalore – one of the state's worst affected districts – proved why true humanity may still be a distant dream.

A recent report published by the National  for   (NCDHR) and the Social awareness Society of Youth (SASY), the dejection that people from lower castes are facing in the state's most underprivileged areas. As if the devastation of the floods were not hard enough on the Dalit community in Cuddalore district, they were also denied the compassion that the rest of the state seemed to receive in the aftermath of the floods.

'The floods washed away everything'

The floods left the low-lying areas in Cuddalore district completely crippled – with houses and roads submerged in water. Keenanur, Manavalanallur, Kottumulai, Ottimedu and about 10 other villages were inundated.

PHOTO: NCDHR, dalit in floods
  • The survey by NCDHR and SASY, which covered 8,400 Dalit and non-Dalit families in 20 villages in the region, revealed that around 90 per cent of the houses, livestock and crops destroyed by the deluge belonged to Dalit families.
  • One of the reason for the acute damage is that the schedule castes are mostly living either on the edge or close to the river on the low-lying areas – making them more vulnerable to damage. A majority of their houses are made of mud and thatch – that were washed away in the deluge.
  • "This is reaffirmation of caste divide as the choice of these people to stay secluded from the other residential areas in their respective villages is borne out of the social norms which are strictly observed there," said Rajesh, NCDHR's Coordinator of National Dalit Watch.

No shelter

  • The Dalit population in the district lack  infrastructure – like schools and community halls – leaving villagers from Dalit communities in Vadakkuthurai, Kongarayanpalayam, Agaram andAmbedkar Nagar villages with no place to take refuge.

  • According to reports, there were also instances where the government rescue teams failed to visit some remote Dalit villages for lack of connectivity. As a result, the Dalit families from Vadukathirumedu, Chillankuppam, Kaduvetti, Varagurpettai and Annavalli could not shifted to safer place after the huge flood hit in their villages.

'Can't quench thirst'

  • In around 90 per cent of the surveyed villages, there was no adequate provision of drinking water. "A number of Dalit families did not receive any drinking water. Most of the public sources are destroyed and villagers in hamlets like Vadakkuthurai, Ennanagaram and Kongarayanpalayam had to travel miles for getting the access," said Pandeyan from the SASY.
  • He narrated of a chilling reminder of Munshi Premchand's story – the Thakur's well. "In Kongarayanpalayam, people from the dominant caste blocked clean water access for the Dalits. This is reflective of the eople's attitude which refuse to compromise with their rusted caste-system even at the time of such hardships," he alleged.

Struggle for survival

  • According to the survey, relief efforts are restricted to specific villages which belong to the upper caste people – mostly in the more accessible district blocks.
  • Reportedly, in the Alamelumangapuram village, a medical camp has been organised in an area which is dominated by high caste people. According to reports, people from the Dalit communities were avoiding the camp for fear of violence and .
  • "Majority of the Dalit villages have been filled with flood water, mixed with sewage. Villages like Nalanthethu, Alamelumangapuram and Vadakkuthurai are under threat of malaria and dengue outbreak," said Rajesh.

'Ram Janambhoomi' Round Two? Unite to Resist the Fascists !

Nationalist RSS - Bhagwa flag

Condemn RSS attack on student activists in Kolkata protesting Mohan Bhagwat

On the evening of 2nd December, RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and Bajrang Dal goons brutally attacked student and youth activists from PDSF (progressive Democratic Students Federation) and KNS (Krantikari Naujawan Sabha) peacefully protesting the presence of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Kolkata, near Science city. Beaten with sticks, sharp weapons, hit directly on the heads, molested and abused, three of them had to be hospitalized and several others are still recovering from serious injuries. Police stood as a mute witness.

We know that this kind of hooliganism from the fascist lumpen brigade is nothing new and is in fact what defines their brand of 'tolerance'. However, as protestors who shouted 'Bhagwat Go Back' were attacked by fascist forces at the gates of the venue where he was speaking, what was brewing inside is even more sinister. Bhagwat came into the city with an expressed communal agenda, ahead of the West Bengalassembly elections early next year and more immediately to stoke communal frenzy as another 6th December approaches. The RSS was commemorating the 'martyrdom' of kar-sevaks Ram and Sharad Kothari who had died during L.K. Advani-led rath-yatra during the Ram Mandir 'movement' in 1990. Bhagawat has been quoted as saying in the meeting, "The grand goal (of building the Ram Janmbhoomi Mandir) may be realized in our own lifetime. May be we can see it with our own eyes…None can say when and how the temple will be constructed, but we need to be prepared and ready".

While Bhagwat readied his forces beyond the gates, democratic and revolutionary youth rallied peacefully outside. The brutal beating up of students and youths protesting the increasing communalization of our society being engineered by the Sangh Parivar is only a minor clue to exactly how Bhagwat expects and plans to see the 'grand goal' being fulfilled in his lifetime. The heightened rate of killings and persecution of members of minority communities and dissenting voices across the country is not news to anybody anymore. We also know this compounding of everyday  is faced most brutally by various oppressed sections including Dalits and other backward castes, , religious minorities-particularly Muslims, and ethnic and other marginalized identities.

The normalization of this fascist violence is precisely the buildup that Bhagwat desires for his stated dream of the building of the Ram Janmbhoomi temple, which is now well established to be little more than an euphemism for the establishment of complete dominance of militant Hindutva politics over the Indian socio-political scene.

The Sangh Parivar has been quick on the move across the country, fanning communal tensions with active State support by the  at the center and in various states. Even in places such as West Bengal with a non- state government, the Sangh has managed to flourish rapidly feeding on the insecurities of the majority Hindu community (as also attacking those seen to be dissenting within these communities), threat and the use of muscle power and also basing itself on the generalized communal commonsense of even so-called opposition parliamentary parties.

The number of RSS shakhas in the state has increased from 650 in 2013 to being projected as reaching 1200 by next year. Communal clashes have been on the rise in the state as in the country, a recent flare-up being witnessed in Medinipur district of the state. This fascist movement is at the current juncture also skillfully helping divert the anger of the masses faced with the intensification of the neo-liberal assault from pro-corporate changes in labour laws, decreasing quality of employment and exploitation of cheap labour in the name of 'Make-in-', rapid disinvestment and exploitation drive of natural resources, hike in and deregulation of prices of various essential goods and services such as life-saving drugs, transport and so on. With Legislative Assembly elections coming up in West Bengal in 2016, the Sangh Parivar's plans for the state are abundantly clear and already afoot. In such a context, Bhagwat's visit to Kolkata in relation to theRam Janmabhoomi Movement and his emphasis on another drive to establish the same could not and ought not to have gone unchallenged.

The blows on the bodies of our comrades yesterday are grave, yet nothing before the blows being dealt out to the body of our social fabric and they only make out skin thicker, our resolve to unitedly fight stronger, our anger deeper. Today on 3rdDecember hundreds of students and youth unitedly rallied in Kolkata against yesterday's attacks with a resolve to resist the growing fascist attacks, but a broader united unrelenting resistance is undoubtedly required. The rath-yatra of 1990 whose 'martyrs' Bhagwat was commemorating was prelude to the horror of communal riots that visited the country in the wake of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6thDecember 1992, post which, over 2000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed across the country. Today as another 6th December approaches, we must ask ourselves, what is this intensifying fascist brutality a prelude to, and must prepare ourselves unitedly to fight back the onslaught in every town, city and village where the Sangh Parivar goes.

Media reports: Adivasi Aikya Vedika, and members of the Food Sovereignty Alliance-India jointly condoled the passing away of the former bureaucrat and supporter of Adivasi movement, B.D. Sharma on Sunday.

Dr. Sharma questioned the hegemony of the State and the process of internal colonisation of Adivasi homelands, a release by the Vedika said.

Dr. Sharma, who passed away at 86 in Gwalior, worked as Bastar district Collector in united Madhya Pradesh, and launched many schemes for welfare of tribal people.

Owing to his work then, he could later play a key role in securing release of the Sukma district Collector Alex Paul Menon, who was kidnapped by Maoists in 2012.

He also served as the last Commissioner of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, between 1986 and 1991, and later as Vice-Chancellor of the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

Dr. Sharma's resolute belief and commitment for decentralised local self-governance anchored by Adivasi customary governance councils resulted in powerful legal instruments such as Panchayat (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 and the Forest Rights Act, 2006, the condolence message by Adivasi Aikya Vedika said.

His journeys through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Adivasi territories campaigning for self governance gave birth to slogans such as 'Maa oorlo maa rajyam' (In our village, we rule).

Madavi Shiva Prasad, the Vedika's Telangana State committee member and Gond tribesman from Adilabad, too conveyed his deep condolences on phone.

After retirement, he founded Bharat Jan Andolan.

Say NO to India-Japan Nuclear Agreement! Protests planned across India ahead of Japanese PM's visit.

Dear friends,

During the Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe's visit to India, protests have been organised against the proposed India-Japan Nuclear Agreement between 11th to 13th December.

Protests have been announced all over India during Shinzo Abe's visit this week. Farmers and fisherfolk whom this deal directly and immediately affects would be protesting in Jaitapur, Mithi Virdi, Kovvada and Koodankulam. Solidarity groups have also called for protests in Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad and other cities.

Protests by civil society groups are also being organised in New York, London, Tokyo and other international cities, as this nuclear agreement has serious international implications.

The deal with Japan is actually a missing piece in the massively destructive nuclear energy expansion that India has embarked upon after signing the disastrous Indo-US nuclear deal. The nuclear projects of America and France in Gujarat's Mithi Virdi, Andhra Pradesh's Kovvada and Maharashtra's Jaitapur cannot proceed without an India-Japan deal, as these designs use crucial components supplied by Japan.

It's important to oppose this agreement as it unleashes an insane and irreversibly destructive nuclear expansion, imposed through brutal repression and denial of local democracy. These projects are being strongly opposed on the ground by farmers and fisherfolk as they displace hundreds of thousands of people and endanger their safety and environment. Several eminent independent experts and former policy makers have also risen it protest highlighting the specific hazards of the new designs, the shoddy environmental clearances issues under political pressure, the lack of transparency and accountability in the nuclear sector, the non-independence of India's nuclear regulator and the insistence of the foreign suppliers for not complying with the Nuclear Liability Act passed by the Indian parliament. After Fukushima, a number of countries have shifted away from nuclear energy and international commitments like this deal to import nuclear technology actually distort India's sovereign energy choices.

People in Japan are also opposing this agreement for the sheer absurdity of Mr. Shinzo Abe selling nuclear technology to other countries even as ongoing nuclear accident in Fukushima takes a turn for the worse. We urge you to lend your support to this urgent cause and stop the India-Japan nuclear agreement that would push the country into a destructive spiral.

Here is the e-petition that more than 1100 people have already signed. Please sign and circulate.

Can BJP & RSS Leaders STOP PROTESTS against INTOLERANCE?

         by Ashok T Jaisinghani

Are the BJP leaders and the ministers in the NDA Government right in severely CRITICIZING and CONDEMNING the writers, scientists, artistes and other intellectuals who have been PROTESTING against the CLIMATE of INTOLERANCE created by the FANATICS of the HINDUTVA outfits?

Why is the BJP-led Government trying to SUPPRESS the FREEDOM of the PEOPLE who want to PROTEST against the INTOLERANCE?

In a DEMOCRACY, do the social reformers, writers, scientists, artistes and others have NO RIGHT to PROTEST against the INTOLERANCE of FANATICS by returning their national, literary and cinema awards? Can they not show SOLIDARITY with those scholars, rationalists and other intellectuals who are THREATENED and KILLED by HINDU FANATICS and TERRORISTS?

HINDU FANATICS do NOT want to TOLERATE anyone who is against superstitions, black magic, idol worship, caste system, untouchability and many other primitive beliefs and practices.

Such FANATICS and TERRORISTS have DIVIDED and WEAKENED the Hindu community by THREATENING and KILLING even GREAT MEN like Mahatma Gandhi.

When even the GREAT HINDU THINKERS and social reformers like Dr Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and Prof M M Kalburgi can be THREATENED, TERRORIZED and MERCILESSLY KILLED by HINDU FANATICS and TERRORISTS, can the Dalits, Muslims and Christians FEEL SAFE in India?

ON FORGETTING

Translated from Hindi by Srirupa Bhattacharya

Is it possible to forget

the spent season of countless killings

hung like thick mist

above graveyards, villages and towns still

Those long nights

that we spent in the shadows of fear

Sleepless

The beads of my rosary

that lie muddied in a ditch still

Lost beneath debris and rubble

Those infants who did not know of a world

outside their mothers' embrace

Mass-graves; tell me, has remembering

been in the nature of man

so that these may be forgotten

What does it mean to live in the engulf of insult of one's faith

And be crushed by the burden of injustices,

A life of terror cooped in dirty ghettos

and in floating ashes of half-hearted smiles,

In the silence of a rusty loom abandoned by coloured threads,

In the reports that have disappeared from newspapers

and the faces that have disappeared from sight.

Will you be able to forget

The scratches that remain to mark your face

Will you not look at them, every time

Will you not think about the moments

when ominous evenings were spared on you

only so that they could mock you

Rebuild Babri Masjid

Forgetting, is it the same as getting justice?

When even the air we breathe

reeks of murderers

Is it possible to forget

the faces of murderers

Trapped waist-deep in the opulence of land, kingdoms

and their heirs;

On seats of powers

The faces of pimps;

In the Parliament, in the Assembly, on TV and theatre screens

glowing faces

of plunderers and murderers

Not only in the heart of Delhi

But in every corner of the world these faces are being identified

Speak to me, jungles of Chiapas

Tell me, African farms

Rain soaked afternoons of Chile,

Villages of Philippines,

Valleys of Kashmir,

Crematoriums of Vidarbh,

Rising fumes in Dharmapuri, Jhajjar and Khairlanji,

Arid mountains of Afghanistan,

Soaring rockets in the winds of Gaza

and all those catapults that are taking aim

Explain to me the topography of that face

Explain that, this face is of Ram and of Obama

also.

This face is of Netanyahu and of Rajapakshe

Of Pizzaro and of Hitler too

Somewhere in the face there is Reagan and there is Thatcher

Nehru and Gandhi and Hedgewar,

Chidambaram, Manmohan, Montek, Advani, Modi

East India Company and Walmart, Shell and Essar

Vedanta and Posco.

All these faces

All the maps

How will you be able to forget them?

If you forget

Then you will have to forget along with them,

All the battles

That have made history the way it is

History of 1945 Germany

History of 1973 Vietnam

Displaced from history and torn from their voices

Some people, whose

Strength has made our today possible, how can

They be forgotten

Slums of my country, thank you

Your incessant fights have kept the memories of insults vivid

Thank you, harvests of the soil

No one knows the enemies' faces better than you

Thank you, wise trees of the land, the accounts of burnt houses

Are still sealed in your memory

Dusty roads, thank you too, for our journey to victories

Will march across your chest

Rivers, ponds and seas, thank you, for we

learnt flowing and confluence from you

Raindrops, thanks to you, for the lesson of dogged determination

You gave to us

To all the roses in every garden, new springs will

take our struggles to new lands

Thank you songs, now we won't let our silence be

Our destiny

Thank you, o moon of my skies, now will never leave behind in the dark

The hope of finding light

Thank you Delhi, your cruelty gives the ways to hate

Thank you Bastar, for the days after tomorrow

We have faith in you

Thank you Manipur for spitting on the face of the enemy

Thank you

Thank you Kashmir, for telling stones

that they are sharp

The lives that breathe in the soil of this land

I am thankful to you, for all great battles begun in the strength

of your wrists

The brave dead, I thank you, for life has

from the manure of your martyrdom

birthed new roses, and honey, and bread, and

New blood

Blood enough

To keep alive memories in our remembering

Now you must say

Tell me, how can you think about forgetting these

But then, if you kept these things in mind

And forgot about fighting

Then the truth of these memories will stand refuted.

Letter from Admiral Ramdas to Shinzo Abe and Modi, against the India-Japan Nuke Deal

It is indeed very surprising that Japan, as the only country which has

experienced the horrors of nuclear explosions at Hiroshima and

Nagasaki , and later the disastrous accident at the Fukushima power

plant and its downstream effects, should now be promoting the sale of

nuclear power plants to India. The fault no doubt lies with both the

buyer and the seller, but in this case we feel a greater

responsibility for promoting such a sale lies at the door of Japan.

I do not need to explain the horrors of a nuclear explosion or an

accidental burn out -‐ for this is now common knowledge. I am of the

firm belief that if humanity is to survive, both nuclear power and

nuclear weapons should be abolished for all time to come.

As a former Indian military person, and one who headed the Indian

Navy, I firmly believe that nuclear weapons are politically counter

productive, economically a disaster, militarily inefficient, ethically

and morally totally indefensible.

Nuclear power likewise has a huge risk potential which as has been

experienced by the USA at Three Mile Island, by the erstwhile Soviet

Union at Chernobyl, and most recently by Japan at Fukushima.

The current proposal to conclude an Indo-‐Japanese Nuclear supply

agreement, to supply nuclear power plants to India, is fraught with

danger and potential consequences which are unimaginable.

I would therefore strongly urge both Prime Minister Modi and Prime

Minister Shinzo Abe that India and Japan should not conclude the

planned nuclear supply agreement.

Regards,

Admiral L. Ramdas

Bhagwat came into the city with an expressed communal agenda, ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections early next year and more immediately to stoke communal frenzy as another 6th December approaches.

People opened the doors of their houses to strangers, shared food and supplies and went out of their way to rescue those stranded in the floods. However, while most of Tamil Nadu experienced these heartwarming scenes, the situation in Cuddalore– one of the state's worst affected districts – proved why true humanity may still be a distant dream.

A recent report published by the National Campaign for DalitHuman Rights (NCDHR) and the Social awareness Society of Youth (SASY),exposed the dejection that people from lower castes are facing in the state's most underprivileged areas.

No shelter

  • The Dalit population in the district lack government infrastructure – like schools and community halls – leaving villagers from Dalit communities in Vadakkuthurai, Kongarayanpalayam, Agaram andAmbedkar Nagar villages with no place to take refuge.

According to reports, people from the Dalit communities were avoiding the camp for fear of violence and discrimination.

  • "Majority of the Dalit villages have been filled with flood water, mixed with sewage. Villages like Nalanthethu, Alamelumangapuram and Vadakkuthurai are under threat of malaria and dengue outbreak," said Rajesh.

How Much Land Does a Man Need?

I

An elder sister came to visit her younger sister in the country.

The elder was married to a tradesman in town, the younger to a

peasant in the village. As the sisters sat over their tea talking,

the elder began to boast of the advantages of town life: saying how

comfortably they lived there, how well they dressed, what fine

clothes her children wore, what good things they ate and drank, and

how she went to the theatre, promenades, and entertainments.

The younger sister was piqued, and in turn disparaged the life of a

tradesman, and stood up for that of a peasant.

"I would not change my way of life for yours," said she. "We may

live roughly, but at least we are free from anxiety. You live in

better style than we do, but though you often earn more than you

need, you are very likely to lose all you have. You know the proverb,

'Loss and gain are brothers twain.' It often happens that people who

are wealthy one day are begging their bread the next. Our way is

safer. Though a peasant's life is not a fat one, it is a long one.

We shall never grow rich, but we shall always have enough to eat."

The elder sister said sneeringly:

"Enough? Yes, if you like to share with the pigs and the calves!

What do you know of elegance or manners! However much your good man

may slave, you will die as you are living-on a dung heap-and your

children the same."

"Well, what of that?" replied the younger. "Of course our work is

rough and coarse. But, on the other hand, it is sure; and we need

not bow to any one. But you, in your towns, are surrounded by

temptations; today all may be right, but tomorrow the Evil One may

tempt your husband with cards, wine, or women, and all will go to

ruin. Don't such things happen often enough?"

Pahom, the master of the house, was lying on the top of the oven,

and he listened to the women's chatter.

"It is perfectly true," thought he. "Busy as we are from childhood

tilling Mother Earth, we peasants have no time to let any nonsense

settle in our heads. Our only trouble is that we haven't land

enough. If I had plenty of land, I shouldn't fear the Devil himself!"

The women finished their tea, chatted a while about dress, and then

cleared away the tea-things and lay down to sleep.

But the Devil had been sitting behind the oven, and had heard all

that was said. He was pleased that the peasant's wife had led her

husband into boasting, and that he had said that if he had plenty of

land he would not fear the Devil himself.

"All right," thought the Devil. "We will have a tussle. I'll give you

land enough; and by means of that land I will get you into my power."

II

Close to the village there lived a lady, a small landowner, who had

an estate of about three hundred acres. She had always lived on

good terms with the peasants, until she engaged as her steward an

old soldier, who took to burdening the people with fines. However

careful Pahom tried to be, it happened again and again that now a

horse of his got among the lady's oats, now a cow strayed into her

garden, now his calves found their way into her meadows-and he

always had to pay a fine.

Pahom paid, but grumbled, and, going home in a temper, was rough

with his family. All through that summer Pahom had much trouble

because of this steward; and he was even glad when winter came and

the cattle had to be stabled. Though he grudged the fodder when

they could no longer graze on the pasture-land, at least he was free

from anxiety about them.

In the winter the news got about that the lady was going to sell her

land, and that the keeper of the inn on the high road was bargaining

for it. When the peasants heard this they were very much alarmed.

"Well," thought they, "if the innkeeper gets the land he will worry us

with fines worse than the lady's steward. We all depend on that estate."

So the peasants went on behalf of their Commune, and asked the lady

not to sell the land to the innkeeper; offering her a better price

for it themselves. The lady agreed to let them have it. Then the

peasants tried to arrange for the Commune to buy the whole estate,

so that it might be held by all in common. They met twice to

discuss it, but could not settle the matter; the Evil One sowed

discord among them, and they could not agree. So they decided to

buy the land individually, each according to his means; and the lady

agreed to this plan as she had to the other.

Presently Pahom heard that a neighbor of his was buying fifty acres,

and that the lady had consented to accept one half in cash and to

wait a year for the other half. Pahom felt envious.

"Look at that," thought he, "the land is all being sold, and I shall

get none of it." So he spoke to his wife.

"Other people are buying," said he, "and we must also buy twenty

acres or so. Life is becoming impossible. That steward is simply

crushing us with his fines."

So they put their heads together and considered how they could

manage to buy it. They had one hundred roubles laid by. They sold

a colt, and one half of their bees; hired out one of their sons as a

laborer, and took his wages in advance; borrowed the rest from a

brother-in-law, and so scraped together half the purchase money.

Having done this, Pahom chose out a farm of forty acres, some of it

wooded, and went to the lady to bargain for it. They came to an

agreement, and he shook hands with her upon it, and paid her a

deposit in advance. Then they went to town and signed the deeds; he

paying half the price down, and undertaking to pay the remainder

within two years.

So now Pahom had land of his own. He borrowed seed, and sowed it on

the land he had bought. The harvest was a good one, and within a

year he had managed to pay off his debts both to the lady and to his

brother-in-law. So he became a landowner, ploughing and sowing his

own land, making hay on his own land, cutting his own trees, and

feeding his cattle on his own pasture. When he went out to plough

his fields, or to look at his growing corn, or at his grass meadows,

his heart would fill with joy. The grass that grew and the flowers

that bloomed there, seemed to him unlike any that grew elsewhere.

Formerly, when he had passed by that land, it had appeared the same

as any other land, but now it seemed quite different.

III

So Pahom was well contented, and everything would have been right if

the neighboring peasants would only not have trespassed on his corn-

fields and meadows. He appealed to them most civilly, but they

still went on: now the Communal herdsmen would let the village cows

stray into his meadows; then horses from the night pasture would get

among his corn. Pahom turned them out again and again, and forgave

their owners, and for a long time he forbore from prosecuting any

one. But at last he lost patience and complained to the District

Court. He knew it was the peasants' want of land, and no evil

intent on their part, that caused the trouble; but he thought:

"I cannot go on overlooking it, or they will destroy all I have.

They must be taught a lesson."

So he had them up, gave them one lesson, and then another, and two

or three of the peasants were fined. After a time Pahom's

neighbours began to bear him a grudge for this, and would now and

then let their cattle on his land on purpose. One peasant even got

into Pahom's wood at night and cut down five young lime trees for

their bark. Pahom passing through the wood one day noticed

something white. He came nearer, and saw the stripped trunks lying

on the ground, and close by stood the stumps, where the tree had

been. Pahom was furious.

"If he had only cut one here and there it would have been bad enough,"

thought Pahom, "but the rascal has actually cut down a whole clump.

If I could only find out who did this, I would pay him out."

He racked his brains as to who it could be. Finally he decided: "It

must be Simon-no one else could have done it." Se he went to

Simon's homestead to have a look around, but he found nothing, and

only had an angry scene. However' he now felt more certain than

ever that Simon had done it, and he lodged a complaint. Simon was

summoned. The case was tried, and re-tried, and at the end of it

all Simon was acquitted, there being no evidence against him. Pahom

felt still more aggrieved, and let his anger loose upon the Elder

and the Judges.

"You let thieves grease your palms," said he. "If you were honest

folk yourselves, you would not let a thief go free."

So Pahom quarrelled with the Judges and with his neighbors. Threats

to burn his building began to be uttered. So though Pahom had more

land, his place in the Commune was much worse than before.

About this time a rumor got about that many people were moving to

new parts.

"There's no need for me to leave my land," thought Pahom. "But some

of the others might leave our village, and then there would be more

room for us. I would take over their land myself, and make my

estate a bit bigger. I could then live more at ease. As it is, I

am still too cramped to be comfortable."

One day Pahom was sitting at home, when a peasant passing through

the village, happened to call in. He was allowed to stay the night,

and supper was given him. Pahom had a talk with this peasant and

asked him where he came from. The stranger answered that he came

from beyond the Volga, where he had been working. One word led to

another, and the man went on to say that many people were settling

in those parts. He told how some people from his village had

settled there. They had joined the Commune, and had had twenty-five

acres per man granted them. The land was so good, he said, that the

rye sown on it grew as high as a horse, and so thick that five cuts

of a sickle made a sheaf. One peasant, he said, had brought nothing

with him but his bare hands, and now he had six horses and two cows

of his own.

Pahom's heart kindled with desire. He thought:

"Why should I suffer in this narrow hole, if one can live so well

elsewhere? I will sell my land and my homestead here, and with the

money I will start afresh over there and get everything new. In

this crowded place one is always having trouble. But I must first

go and find out all about it myself."

Towards summer he got ready and started. He went down the Volga on

a steamer to Samara, then walked another three hundred miles on

foot, and at last reached the place. It was just as the stranger

had said. The peasants had plenty of land: every man had twenty-

five acres of Communal land given him for his use, and any one who

had money could buy, besides, at fifty-cents an acre as much good

freehold land as he wanted.

Having found out all he wished to know, Pahom returned home as

autumn came on, and began selling off his belongings. He sold his

land at a profit, sold his homestead and all his cattle, and

withdrew from membership of the Commune. He only waited till the

spring, and then started with his family for the new settlement.

IV

As soon as Pahom and his family arrived at their new abode, he

applied for admission into the Commune of a large village. He stood

treat to the Elders, and obtained the necessary documents. Five

shares of Communal land were given him for his own and his sons'

use: that is to say--125 acres (not altogether, but in different

fields) besides the use of the Communal pasture. Pahom put up the

buildings he needed, and bought cattle. Of the Communal land alone

he had three times as much as at his former home, and the land was

good corn-land. He was ten times better off than he had been. He

had plenty of arable land and pasturage, and could keep as many head

of cattle as he liked.

At first, in the bustle of building and settling down, Pahom was

pleased with it all, but when he got used to it he began to think

that even here he had not enough land. The first year, he sowed

wheat on his share of the Communal land, and had a good crop. He

wanted to go on sowing wheat, but had not enough Communal land for

the purpose, and what he had already used was not available; for in

those parts wheat is only sown on virgin soil or on fallow land. It

is sown for one or two years, and then the land lies fallow till it

is again overgrown with prairie grass. There were many who wanted

such land, and there was not enough for all; so that people

quarrelled about it. Those who were better off, wanted it for

growing wheat, and those who were poor, wanted it to let to dealers,

so that they might raise money to pay their taxes. Pahom wanted to

sow more wheat; so he rented land from a dealer for a year. He

sowed much wheat and had a fine crop, but the land was too far from

the village--the wheat had to be carted more than ten miles. After

a time Pahom noticed that some peasant-dealers were living on

separate farms, and were growing wealthy; and he thought:

"If I were to buy some freehold land, and have a homestead on it, it

would be a different thing, altogether. Then it would all be nice

and compact."

The question of buying freehold land recurred to him again and again.

He went on in the same way for three years; renting land and sowing

wheat. The seasons turned out well and the crops were good, so that

he began to lay money by. He might have gone on living contentedly,

but he grew tired of having to rent other people's land every year,

and having to scramble for it. Wherever there was good land to be

had, the peasants would rush for it and it was taken up at once, so

that unless you were sharp about it you got none. It happened in

the third year that he and a dealer together rented a piece of

pasture land from some peasants; and they had already ploughed it

up, when there was some dispute, and the peasants went to law about

it, and things fell out so that the labor was all lost.

"If it were my own land," thought Pahom, "I should be independent,

and there would not be all this unpleasantness."

So Pahom began looking out for land which he could buy; and he came

across a peasant who had bought thirteen hundred acres, but having

got into difficulties was willing to sell again cheap. Pahom

bargained and haggled with him, and at last they settled the price

at 1,500 roubles, part in cash and part to be paid later. They had

all but clinched the matter, when a passing dealer happened to stop

at Pahom's one day to get a feed for his horse. He drank tea with

Pahom, and they had a talk. The dealer said that he was just

returning from the land of the Bashkirs, far away, where he had

bought thirteen thousand acres of land all for 1,000 roubles. Pahom

questioned him further, and the tradesman said:

"All one need do is to make friends with the chiefs. I gave away

about one hundred roubles' worth of dressing-gowns and carpets,

besides a case of tea, and I gave wine to those who would drink it;

and I got the land for less than two cents an acre. And he showed

Pahom the title-deeds, saying:

"The land lies near a river, and the whole prairie is virgin soil."

Pahom plied him with questions, and the tradesman said:

"There is more land there than you could cover if you walked a year,

and it all belongs to the Bashkirs. They are as simple as sheep,

and land can be got almost for nothing."

"There now," thought Pahom, "with my one thousand roubles, why

should I get only thirteen hundred acres, and saddle myself with a

debt besides. If I take it out there, I can get more than ten times

as much for the money."

V

Pahom inquired how to get to the place, and as soon as the tradesman

had left him, he prepared to go there himself. He left his wife to

look after the homestead, and started on his journey taking his man

with him. They stopped at a town on their way, and bought a case of

tea, some wine, and other presents, as the tradesman had advised.

On and on they went until they had gone more than three hundred

miles, and on the seventh day they came to a place where the

Bashkirs had pitched their tents. It was all just as the tradesman

had said. The people lived on the steppes, by a river, in felt-

covered tents. They neither tilled the ground, nor ate bread.

Their cattle and horses grazed in herds on the steppe. The colts

were tethered behind the tents, and the mares were driven to them

twice a day. The mares were milked, and from the milk kumiss was

made. It was the women who prepared kumiss, and they also made

cheese. As far as the men were concerned, drinking kumiss and tea,

eating mutton, and playing on their pipes, was all they cared about.

They were all stout and merry, and all the summer long they never

thought of doing any work. They were quite ignorant, and knew no

Russian, but were good-natured enough.

As soon as they saw Pahom, they came out of their tents and gathered

round their visitor. An interpreter was found, and Pahom told them

he had come about some land. The Bashkirs seemed very glad; they

took Pahom and led him into one of the best tents, where they made

him sit on some down cushions placed on a carpet, while they sat

round him. They gave him tea and kumiss, and had a sheep killed,

and gave him mutton to eat. Pahom took presents out of his cart and

distributed them among the Bashkirs, and divided amongst them the

tea. The Bashkirs were delighted. They talked a great deal among

themselves, and then told the interpreter to translate.

"They wish to tell you," said the interpreter, "that they like you,

and that it is our custom to do all we can to please a guest and to

repay him for his gifts. You have given us presents, now tell us

which of the things we possess please you best, that we may present

them to you."

"What pleases me best here," answered Pahom, "is your land. Our

land is crowded, and the soil is exhausted; but you have plenty of

land and it is good land. I never saw the like of it."

The interpreter translated. The Bashkirs talked among themselves

for a while. Pahom could not understand what they were saying, but

saw that they were much amused, and that they shouted and laughed.

Then they were silent and looked at Pahom while the interpreter said:

"They wish me to tell you that in return for your presents they will

gladly give you as much land as you want. You have only to point it

out with your hand and it is yours."

The Bashkirs talked again for a while and began to dispute. Pahom

asked what they were disputing about, and the interpreter told him

that some of them thought they ought to ask their Chief about the

land and not act in his absence, while others thought there was no

need to wait for his return.

VI

While the Bashkirs were disputing, a man in a large fox-fur cap

appeared on the scene. They all became silent and rose to their

feet. The interpreter said, "This is our Chief himself."

Pahom immediately fetched the best dressing-gown and five pounds of

tea, and offered these to the Chief. The Chief accepted them, and

seated himself in the place of honour. The Bashkirs at once began

telling him something. The Chief listened for a while, then made a

sign with his head for them to be silent, and addressing himself to

Pahom, said in Russian:

"Well, let it be so. Choose whatever piece of land you like; we

have plenty of it."

"How can I take as much as I like?" thought Pahom. "I must get a

deed to make it secure, or else they may say, 'It is yours,' and

afterwards may take it away again."

"Thank you for your kind words," he said aloud. "You have much

land, and I only want a little. But I should like to be sure which

bit is mine. Could it not be measured and made over to me? Life and

death are in God's hands. You good people give it to me, but your

children might wish to take it away again."

"You are quite right," said the Chief. "We will make it over to you."

"I heard that a dealer had been here," continued Pahom, "and that

you gave him a little land, too, and signed title-deeds to that

effect. I should like to have it done in the same way."

The Chief understood.

"Yes," replied he, "that can be done quite easily. We have a scribe,

and we will go to town with you and have the deed properly sealed."

"And what will be the price?" asked Pahom.

"Our price is always the same: one thousand roubles a day."

Pahom did not understand.

"A day? What measure is that? How many acres would that be?"

"We do not know how to reckon it out," said the Chief. "We sell it

by the day. As much as you can go round on your feet in a day is

yours, and the price is one thousand roubles a day."

Pahom was surprised.

"But in a day you can get round a large tract of land," he said.

The Chief laughed.

"It will all be yours!" said he. "But there is one condition: If

you don't return on the same day to the spot whence you started,

your money is lost."

"But how am I to mark the way that I have gone?"

"Why, we shall go to any spot you like, and stay there. You must

start from that spot and make your round, taking a spade with you.

Wherever you think necessary, make a mark. At every turning, dig a

hole and pile up the turf; then afterwards we will go round with a

plough from hole to hole. You may make as large a circuit as you

please, but before the sun sets you must return to the place you

started from. All the land you cover will be yours."

Pahom was delighted. It-was decided to start early next morning.

They talked a while, and after drinking some more kumiss and eating

some more mutton, they had tea again, and then the night came on.

They gave Pahom a feather-bed to sleep on, and the Bashkirs

dispersed for the night, promising to assemble the next morning at

daybreak and ride out before sunrise to the appointed spot.

VII

Pahom lay on the feather-bed, but could not sleep. He kept thinking

about the land.

"What a large tract I will mark off!" thought he. "I can easily go

thirty-five miles in a day. The days are long now, and within a

circuit of thirty-five miles what a lot of land there will be! I

will sell the poorer land, or let it to peasants, but I'll pick out

the best and farm it. I will buy two ox-teams, and hire two more

laborers. About a hundred and fifty acres shall be plough-land, and

I will pasture cattle on the rest."

Pahom lay awake all night, and dozed off only just before dawn.

Hardly were his eyes closed when he had a dream. He thought he was

lying in that same tent, and heard somebody chuckling outside. He

wondered who it could be, and rose and went out, and he saw the

Bashkir Chief sitting in front of the tent holding his side and

rolling about with laughter. Going nearer to the Chief, Pahom

asked: "What are you laughing at?" But he saw that it was no longer

the Chief, but the dealer who had recently stopped at his house and

had told him about the land. Just as Pahom was going to ask, "Have

you been here long?" he saw that it was not the dealer, but the

peasant who had come up from the Volga, long ago, to Pahom's old

home. Then he saw that it was not the peasant either, but the Devil

himself with hoofs and horns, sitting there and chuckling, and

before him lay a man barefoot, prostrate on the ground, with only

trousers and a shirt on. And Pahom dreamt that he looked more

attentively to see what sort of a man it was lying there, and he saw

that the man was dead, and that it was himself! He awoke horror-struck.

"What things one does dream," thought he.

Looking round he saw through the open door that the dawn was breaking.

"It's time to wake them up," thought he. "We ought to be starting."

He got up, roused his man (who was sleeping in his cart), bade him

harness; and went to call the Bashkirs.

"It's time to go to the steppe to measure the land," he said.

The Bashkirs rose and assembled, and the Chief came, too. Then they

began drinking kumiss again, and offered Pahom some tea, but he

would not wait.

"If we are to go, let us go. It is high time," said he.

VIII

The Bashkirs got ready and they all started: some mounted on horses,

and some in carts. Pahom drove in his own small cart with his

servant, and took a spade with him. When they reached the steppe,

the morning red was beginning to kindle. They ascended a hillock

(called by the Bashkirs a shikhan) and dismounting from their carts

and their horses, gathered in one spot. The Chief came up to Pahom

and stretched out his arm towards the plain:

"See," said he, "all this, as far as your eye can reach, is ours.

You may have any part of it you like."

Pahom's eyes glistened: it was all virgin soil, as flat as the palm

of your hand, as black as the seed of a poppy, and in the hollows

different kinds of grasses grew breast high.

The Chief took off his fox-fur cap, placed it on the ground and said:

"This will be the mark. Start from here, and return here again.

All the land you go round shall be yours."

Pahom took out his money and put it on the cap. Then he took off

his outer coat, remaining in his sleeveless under coat. He

unfastened his girdle and tied it tight below his stomach, put a

little bag of bread into the breast of his coat, and tying a flask

of water to his girdle, he drew up the tops of his boots, took the

spade from his man, and stood ready to start. He considered for

some moments which way he had better go--it was tempting everywhere.

"No matter," he concluded, "I will go towards the rising sun."

He turned his face to the east, stretched himself, and waited for

the sun to appear above the rim.

"I must lose no time," he thought, "and it is easier walking while

it is still cool."

The sun's rays had hardly flashed above the horizon, before Pahom,

carrying the spade over his shoulder, went down into the steppe.

Pahom started walking neither slowly nor quickly. After having gone

a thousand yards he stopped, dug a hole and placed pieces of turf

one on another to make it more visible. Then he went on; and now

that he had walked off his stiffness he quickened his pace. After a

while he dug another hole.

Pahom looked back. The hillock could be distinctly seen in the

sunlight, with the people on it, and the glittering tires of the

cartwheels. At a rough guess Pahom concluded that he had walked

three miles. It was growing warmer; he took off his under-coat,

flung it across his shoulder, and went on again. It had grown quite

warm now; he looked at the sun, it was time to think of breakfast.

"The first shift is done, but there are four in a day, and it is too

soon yet to turn. But I will just take off my boots," said he to himself.

He sat down, took off his boots, stuck them into his girdle, and went on.

It was easy walking now.

"I will go on for another three miles," thought he, "and then turn

to the left. The spot is so fine, that it would be a pity to lose

it. The further one goes, the better the land seems."

He went straight on a for a while, and when he looked round, the

hillock was scarcely visible and the people on it looked like black

ants, and he could just see something glistening there in the sun.

"Ah," thought Pahom, "I have gone far enough in this direction, it

is time to turn. Besides I am in a regular sweat, and very thirsty."

He stopped, dug a large hole, and heaped up pieces of turf. Next he

untied his flask, had a drink, and then turned sharply to the left.

He went on and on; the grass was high, and it was very hot.

Pahom began to grow tired: he looked at the sun and saw that it was noon.

"Well," he thought, "I must have a rest."

He sat down, and ate some bread and drank some water; but he did not

lie down, thinking that if he did he might fall asleep. After

sitting a little while, he went on again. At first he walked

easily: the food had strengthened him; but it had become terribly

hot, and he felt sleepy; still he went on, thinking: "An hour to

suffer, a life-time to live."

He went a long way in this direction also, and was about to turn to

the left again, when he perceived a damp hollow: "It would be a pity

to leave that out," he thought. "Flax would do well there." So he

went on past the hollow, and dug a hole on the other side of it

before he turned the corner. Pahom looked towards the hillock. The

heat made the air hazy: it seemed to be quivering, and through the

haze the people on the hillock could scarcely be seen.

"Ah!" thought Pahom, "I have made the sides too long; I must make

this one shorter." And he went along the third side, stepping

faster. He looked at the sun: it was nearly half way to the

horizon, and he had not yet done two miles of the third side of the

square. He was still ten miles from the goal.

"No," he thought, "though it will make my land lopsided, I must

hurry back in a straight line now. I might go too far, and as it is

I have a great deal of land."

So Pahom hurriedly dug a hole, and turned straight towards the hillock.

IX

Pahom went straight towards the hillock, but he now walked with

difficulty. He was done up with the heat, his bare feet were cut

and bruised, and his legs began to fail. He longed to rest, but it

was impossible if he meant to get back before sunset. The sun waits

for no man, and it was sinking lower and lower.

"Oh dear," he thought, "if only I have not blundered trying for too

much! What if I am too late?"

He looked towards the hillock and at the sun. He was still far from

his goal, and the sun was already near the rim. Pahom walked on and

on; it was very hard walking, but he went quicker and quicker. He

pressed on, but was still far from the place. He began running,

threw away his coat, his boots, his flask, and his cap, and kept

only the spade which he used as a support.

"What shall I do," he thought again, "I have grasped too much, and

ruined the whole affair. I can't get there before the sun sets."

And this fear made him still more breathless. Pahom went on

running, his soaking shirt and trousers stuck to him, and his mouth

was parched. His breast was working like a blacksmith's bellows,

his heart was beating like a hammer, and his legs were giving way as

if they did not belong to him. Pahom was seized with terror lest he

should die of the strain.

Though afraid of death, he could not stop. "After having run all

that way they will call me a fool if I stop now," thought he. And

he ran on and on, and drew near and heard the Bashkirs yelling and

shouting to him, and their cries inflamed his heart still more. He

gathered his last strength and ran on.

The sun was close to the rim, and cloaked in mist looked large, and

red as blood. Now, yes now, it was about to set! The sun was quite

low, but he was also quite near his aim. Pahom could already see

the people on the hillock waving their arms to hurry him up. He

could see the fox-fur cap on the ground, and the money on it, and

the Chief sitting on the ground holding his sides. And Pahom

remembered his dream.

"There is plenty of land," thought he, "but will God let me live on

it? I have lost my life, I have lost my life! I shall never reach

that spot!"

Pahom looked at the sun, which had reached the earth: one side of it

had already disappeared. With all his remaining strength he rushed

on, bending his body forward so that his legs could hardly follow

fast enough to keep him from falling. Just as he reached the

hillock it suddenly grew dark. He looked up--the sun had already

set. He gave a cry: "All my labor has been in vain," thought he,

and was about to stop, but he heard the Bashkirs still shouting, and

remembered that though to him, from below, the sun seemed to have

set, they on the hillock could still see it. He took a long breath

and ran up the hillock. It was still light there. He reached the

top and saw the cap. Before it sat the Chief laughing and holding

his sides. Again Pahom remembered his dream, and he uttered a cry:

his legs gave way beneath him, he fell forward and reached the cap

with his hands.

"Ah, what a fine fellow!" exclaimed the Chief. "He has gained

much land!"

Pahom's servant came running up and tried to raise him, but he saw

that blood was flowing from his mouth. Pahom was dead!

The Bashkirs clicked their tongues to show their pity.

His servant picked up the spade and dug a grave long enough for

Pahom to lie in, and buried him in it. Six feet from his head to

his heels was all he needed.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump called Monday for barring all Muslims from entering the United States! The US presidential frontrunner sparked furious outrage after he said Barack Obama should stop allMuslims travelling in and out of the country until they can "figure out what is going on" with regards to Islamic State (ISIS) inspired terror attacks !

Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told CNN on Monday that the ban would apply not just to Muslim foreigners looking to immigrate to the US, but also to Muslims looking to visit the US as tourists!

Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has provoked condemnation from across the political spectrum, by saying Muslims should be banned from entering the US. Republicans, Democrats,Muslim leaders, the UN and foreign leaders criticised the call! A day after Donald J. Trump called for a ban on the entry of Muslims into the United States, much of the rest of the world on Tuesday looked at the American presidential election with a mix of befuddlement and despair.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump played a trump card to upset the Democratic Apple Cart but democrats would not let to happen this so easily.Creating Islamophobia in America reminds us the Hindutva agenda to make India Muslim Free and we describe it Intolerance which kills tolerance and pluralism inherent in India!Another Trump staffer confirmed that the ban would also apply to American Muslims who were currently overseas – presumably including members of the military and diplomatic service.Like India,America has an agenda to be free of Islam, then?

The billionaire frontrunner's plan tipped the Republican presidential race into chaos, with party leaders from the chairman of the Republican National Committee to former US vice-president Dick Cheney condemning the idea as "un-American"!However,in ABC News' exclusive one-on-one interview with Donald Trump, the presidential candidate shrugged off widespread criticism of his plan to ban Muslims in America. The world has taken notice and the backlash is fierce, but Trump is not backing down.

The White House on Tuesday urged Republicans to denounce GOP presidential candidate front-runner Donald Trump following his call for Muslims to be banned from entering the United States, adding that the inflammatory remark "disqualifies" him!

It is claimed that Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump cited a misleading poll from Washington Times columnist Frank Gaffney's Center for Security Policy to justify a call he issued "for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States ...It is not the story,I am afraid!

Trump is addressing the most powerful audience in America and out of America,it should be understood!Because,Donald Trump — who has spent his months atop the Republican polls slowly replacing the anti-immigrant rhetoric in his campaign with anti-Muslim rhetoric — is now officially calling to ban allMuslims from entering the United States. Why?

Repudiated across much of the political spectrum but defended on conservative talk radio, Donald J. Trump on Tuesday stood by his call to block all Muslims from entering the United States. Why?

And many in US and Europe would say,"Trump, by alienating the Muslim world with his call for a ban on Muslims entering America, is acting as the Islamic State's secret agent!Media are calling out Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States for marginalizing Muslims and helping ISIS recruitment tactics.

It would rather enhance his chances to become the next President,if believed at all by those who run the US Politics as well as economics as they have more loyal and more powerful agents in Democratic Party!

However, the American wisdom cries-In an atmosphere of rising Islamophobia in the US that is arguably worse than the aftermath of 9/11 in 2001!as we cry aginst this intolerance tsunami in India!

Donald Trump calls for a complete ban on Muslims entering the US!His logic is the same, the demography equations as By 2050, their numbers will grow -- to 2.1%. Of all the Muslims in America, 63% are exactly the kind Trump wants banned -- immigrants.

Religious nationalism never had been the theme song in America in Presidential election. It is a dfferent ball play to win the stronger Zionist Lobby which is the heart and mind of the war against terror and Trump tries to prove that he would protect Untied States of America! As Hindutva is remains in danger in India to provoke Hindutva tsunami,it is never the same case.Trump is not invoking Christianity and Muslims happen to be micro minority in America as Brahmins are micro minority in India and identity politics gets the ground zero to launch caste war!

It is Islamophobia for which America created Taliban,Al Queda and ISIS.Israel joined ISIS, it is no more any secret and the illegal oil flow from Syria and Middle east enrich, enhance the economics of Israel which roots in America at the cost of life and saftey of US citizens and taxpayers!

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump called Monday for a blanket ban on all Muslims entering the United States, further stoking an incendiary debate spurred by recent mass shootings carried out by terrorists in Paris and Southern California.

Trump, in a formal statement from his campaign, urged a "total and complete shutdown" of all federal processes allowing followers of Islam into the country until elected leaders can "figure out what is going on."

Asked by The Hill whether that would include American Muslims currently abroad, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks replied over email: "Mr. Trump says, 'everyone.'"

During a Tuesday morning interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," however, Trump clarified that American Muslims would still be able to travel freely under his plan.

"If a person is a Muslim and goes overseas and come back, they can come back. They are a citizen, that is different," Trump said.

The call, which he made hours after the release of a poll showing Trump being overtaken by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in early-voting Iowa, drew swift and forceful condemnation from the White House and virtually every presidential candidate in both parties.

Describing Trump's proposal as "unhinged,""fascist" and "downright dangerous," Trump's rivals sought to characterize it as further evidence the bombastic real estate mogul is unfit to lead the country.

"Again, this is the kind of thing that people say when they have no experience and don't know what they're talking about," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said in an interview. "We do not need to endorse that type of activity, nor should we."

Yet Trump maintains that a significant number of Muslims harbor a "hatred" toward America, citing a poll by the Center for Security Policy, a think-tank that has criticized the role of Muslims in America.

That survey showed that one-quarter of Muslims living in America polled "agreed that violence against Americans here in the United States is justified as part of the global jihad" and that a majority think that Muslims in America should be allowed to answer to Shariah law.

"Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine," Trump said.

"Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life."

The remarks are a departure from Trump's previous statements about Muslims.

"I love Muslims. I think they're great people," Trump said during a September campaign stop in Iowa, according to The Huffington Post.

Trump also indicated he would consider having a Muslim in his Cabinet or as his running mate.

"Oh, absolutely," he said. "No problem with that."

An estimated 100,000 Muslims immigrated to the United States in 2012, a 2013 report from the Pew Research Center found.

Trump continues to hold a hold a lead atop the national GOP presidential polls, but might have been bumped by Cruz in Iowa. Monmouth released a poll Monday showing Cruz ahead of Trump by 5 points, though a CNN poll hours later showed Trump ahead of Cruz by 13 points there.

Trump's comments come less than a week after a mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., killed 14 people. The alleged shooters were both Muslim, and the federal government is investigating whether the attack was tied to terrorism.

The move also follows an Oval Office address President Obama gave Sunday night appealing for tolerance in light of the California shooting.

"It's our responsibility to reject proposals that Muslim Americans should somehow be treated differently. Because when we travel down that road, we lose. That kind of divisiveness, that betrayal of our values plays into the hands of groups like ISIL," Obama said.

"Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our co-workers, our sports heroes. And, yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country. We have to remember that."

On Monday, White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes called Trump's comments "totally contrary to our values as Americans," during a  CNN interview, contending the rhetoric plays right into the hands of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria by "sending a message" that America is at war with Islam.

"Embracing that frame … is going to make it very difficult to partner with Muslim communities here in the United States and around the world to prevent the scourge of radicalization," he said.

To be sure, some of Trump's GOP rivals have called to restrict refugees from majority Muslim countries in light of concerns about terror attacks.

Cruz, for instance, proposed a bill to bar refugees from countries with "territory substantially controlled by a foreign terrorist organization" with an exception carved out for those facing genocide. While he doesn't specifically exempt Christian refugees from those countries, he's said repeatedly that Christian refugees don't pose a threat and should be welcomed into America.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) proposed a similar bill to bar refugees from countries with "significant jihadist movements."

But none has gone so far as to call for an outright ban, and the rest of the field wasted no time in lambasting Trump's plan.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called Trump "unhinged" in a tweet, arguing that his "'policy' proposals are not serious."

Another presidential hopeful, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), tweeted that Trump "has gone from making absurd comments to being downright dangerous with his bombastic rhetoric."

Liberal Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) tweeted, "The U.S. is a strong nation when we stand together. We are weak when we allow racism and xenophobia to divide us."

Hillary Clinton, who leads all polling in the race for the Democratic nomination, also did not mince words in her rebuke of Trump's plan.

"This is reprehensible, prejudiced and divisive," she tweeted. "@RealDonaldTrump, you don't get it. This makes us less safe."

On the evening of 2nd December, RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and Bajrang Dal goons brutally attacked student and youth activists from PDSF (progressiveDemocratic Students Federation) and KNS (Krantikari Naujawan Sabha) peacefully protesting the presence of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Kolkata, near Science city.

Bhagwat came into the city with an expressed communal agenda, ahead of theWest Bengal assembly elections early next year and more immediately to stoke communal frenzy as another 6th December approaches. The RSS was commemorating the 'martyrdom' of kar-sevaks Ram and Sharad Kothari who had died duringL.K.

Trump says, 'everyone.' "
During a Tuesday morninginterview with ABC's "Good Morning America," however, Trump clarified that American Muslims would still be able to travel freely under his plan.
Describing Trump's proposal as "unhinged," "fascist" and "downright dangerous," Trump's rivals sought to characterize it as further evidence the bombastic real estate mogul is unfit to lead the country.
Jeb Bush called Trump "unhinged" in a tweet, arguing that his " 'policy' proposals are not serious."

Here you are!

The wee hours of September 18, 2002 saw the death of one homeless laborer and severe injuries to 4 others, courtesy Salman Khan's Land Cruiser. Salman, his fans and the industry have a reason to celebrate today as the Honorable High Court of Bombay has acquitted the superstar of all charges in the hit- and- run case, pointing at the "unexplained and glaring anomalies" in the evidence produced by the prosecution. However, this jubilation does not extend to the Homeless Collective, working with the homeless in the city of Mumbai and the thousands of homeless people who go to sleep each night with the palpable fear of being run over by a luxury vehicle. Our angst is not directed against Salman Khan or against the right and wrong of the verdict because we are not the ones to take call on that. What bothers us is the state's apathy towards the homeless, the system which refuses to acknowledge the perils of living on the street and shirking the responsibility of the death of many, many homeless citizens of this country, who have no option but to risk their lives every day as they sleep on footpaths and streets. By turning a blind eye to the needs of the homeless, denying their existence and treating their life and death as of little consequence, Isn't our system allowing more Salmans, more Pereiras and Nandas to crush lives of the homeless under their speeding BMWs, Audis and SUVs? It is not about who was behind the wheel, it is about why people in one city, forced to sleep on the street?

The Bombay High Court on Thursday acquitted actor Salman Khan of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The court has directed the actor, who was present in court for pronouncement of verdict, to furnish a fresh cash bond of Rs 25,000 on cancellation of the bond in the trial court.

The Bandra Police Station has been asked to return his passport upon verification.

Earlier, while disposing of the appeal filed by actor Salman Khan against a five year jail term by a lower court in the 2002 hit-and-run case, the court had said that the prosecution had failed to successfully establish the case on all the charges levelled against the actor. Justice A R Joshi disposed of the appeal and said that order will be given once the actor is present before the court.

2002 hit-and-run case: Full coverage

"Any strong suspicion cannot be enough to hold someone guilty. Prosecution hasn't brought material on record to prove case and its entire evidence was based circumstantial in nature," said Justice Joshi. He said that, while testimony of Salman' s bodyguard Ravindra Patil could be of a direct nature, the court had already said it could not be considered and the trial court had erred in taking it on record.

He said that he was not "oblivious of perception of general public" but the court must decide the case based on material brought on record. Pointing to the order passed by the Sessions' Court convicting Salman for five years, Justice Joshi said that "appreciation of evidence by trail court was not proper as per principles of criminal jurisprudence."

ALSO READ: Salman Khan hit-and-run case chronology

He pointed out that the Sessions Court erred in accepting the bills which were produced by the investigating agency as proof of Salman and friends drinking at Rain Bar.

According to the High Court, the prosecution failed to prove that the actor was drinking and moreover driving the vehicle on the night of the accident.

He also pointed to several hypothesis which were created around the case such as the faulty manner of Investigation where the prosecution failed to establish procedure of connecting chain of evidence with regard to collecting biological evidence. The other point was relating to purposely keeping loose ends so that a favourable order is achieved for the accused.

You bring very pertinent issue to fore. There must be public information campaign and policies formed soon. I might add to pay more attention on ground water and forestation. Kathmandu is becoming like a concrete impervious surface. There must be points for surface waters to go down. House designs may be encouraged to have underground tanks to catch rain water. Matter of fact, the tanks and solar panels should be a part of architect, rather than later additional.
I have read some where that wells (Toon / Inar) helps in dampening earthquakes and damage is less around it. Since we had earthquake, it may be good to do some research to see if it is really true. All we need to do is to go around and observe the damages in Chowks with and without wells. I wonder if geology, architecture and civil engineering students could be invited to do so. If it is really so, then wells would serve double as water source and earthquake dampening system.
Thanks for your information.
Sincerely,
Tilak Shrestha, Ph.D.

Effects of the global warming in the Himalayas

Chinese Climatologists have recently reported that the snow in the Mt. Everest is disappearing very fast due to the warming of the Earth and all the rivers fed by the glaciers in the Himalayas might dry up.

The report by the Chinese Climatologists should warn all of the planners of Nepal and the inhabitants of Kathmandu Valley that the dream of drinking water from the Melemchi River might end into a tragedy. The tragedy might be more disastrous than the ongoing scarcity of petrol.

I have never heard that the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea might dry up any time in the distant future of the Earth. Clouds formed in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are the sources of rain-fall in Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu Valley has plenty of rain-fall and India would never have the technology to stop the rain-fall in Nepal by stopping the clouds over India from travelling towards Nepal.

I would like to opine that rain-water harvesting in Kathmandu Valley by constructing a dam at Chovar Gorge would be the most reliable strategy for meeting the drinking water needs of the capital city of Nepal. Not a single drop of water should be allowed to flow out of the Gorge by constantly deepening Bagmati River without any damage to the cultural heritage of the ghats.

Rain water is the cleanest water in nature that needs almost no purification. The only thing we have to do is to stop polluting the river. Sanitary management of the sewage generated by millions is another main part of the strategy. Bio-technologists might also be able to produce substantial amount of fuel from the human wastes generated by the millions every day.

I would like to suggest the 26 KM long tunnel being constructed to bring water from Melemchi to be adapted to bring liquid fuel from China by extending this tunnel to Tibet. Tibet is located much higher than Kathmandu and the tunnel would bring petrol by gravity with no need of pumps or tankers. The flooding of the river system of the Valley would also solve the problem created by the depletion of the under-ground water resources resulting into the rejuvenation of the age-old water fountains that would certainly enrich the tourism industry of Nepal. Bagmati River with a lot of water round the year might also open new possibilities for the development of river transportation that would help to stop the traffic congestion on the surface roads.

Dear all Nepali nationalists!
Namaste from Kathmandu!

Religiously, I am not biased. The religious structure of Nepalese society is formally Hindu; but here and only here the interplay of peoples and their religious traditions has produced a rich fusion of Hindu and Buddhist faiths. It is common for both Hindus and Buddhists to worship at the same shrine, for many gods and saints are cross-over, often known by a different name but holding the same attributes. The original inhabitants of the valley were animists, a tradition which survives in the multitude of spirits, demons, local deities, and stones which receive dutiful worship to this day. Hindu and Buddhist traditions adapted from the pre-existing animist practices and from each other. Indeed, in the medieval period, when both religions' practice adopted mystical, Tantrik traditions, they were almost indistinguishable from each other.
Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini in the 6th century BC in mid Tarai, Nepal. Nepal has been a pious and holy land for all Buddhists as well as all kinds of religious men and women. Buddha has guided human society on the path of peace, non-violence and prosperous thinking. Gautam Buddha meditated at Sarnath-Banarash and acquired the Light of Knowledge (Mokchya) under the holy fig-tree at Gaya, which is now called Buddha Gaya. The descriptions of famous ancient Chinese pilgrims, Huian Tsang (who traveled through India between AD 629 & 645) and Fa Hein (who traveled between AD 400 & AD 414) indicate to this area, saying, 'Lumbini, where the Lord was born, is a piece of heaven on earth where one could see the snowy mountains amidst a splendid garden embedded with Stupas and monasteries.'
'Hindu culture and traditions have a long history spanning over a period of thousands and thousands of years and developed over several eras. They remain indispensable to the lives of Hindus and Hindu Temples today as sources of religious practices, spiritual inspiration, cultural expression, and social bonding. They bind all Hindus together irrespective of the regional and ethnic diversity. Hindu Temples have been built over so many centuries. All the Temples have their unique history as to how they were built, who built them, what kind of architectures were selected, how they selected the presiding deity, what kind of customs they have developed over the years to run the Temples, and what kind of festivals are performed. As a result, Temples often greatly vary in their appearance, rituals, traditions, festivals and customs from region to region. Temples in southern states, eastern states, northern states and Western India have their distinctive characteristics. These temples are very different from one state to the other. Diversity and imagination are the hallmark of Hindu mind.'

"Hindus have great logical meanings behind everything. If you deeply look into the performance of a Hindu devotee while bowing down to a deity, you will find out that his ritual of moving his hand upward to touch the head first and then touch the eyes and then heart, automatically, makes a cross and the Catholics have adopted this "Cross of Heart" ritual without knowing the depth." Spiritual miraculous, myth filled, the ancient Kathmandu is called the city of Hindu and Buddhist temples and Stupas. It is a wonder where mountains are young and mysterious in wood, stone and metal abound. Every temple has a story and every monument unfolds a myth and every Stupa carries a story. In this city Gods and Goddesses flare through the roads in processions carried from ornate temples.

'In Nepal, religion is not just a set of beliefs and accompanying rituals handed down from generation to generation; rather it is a complex intermingling of traditions, festivals, faiths and doctrines that have permeated every strata of Nepalese Society in such a way as to become the very heartbeat of the nation. Nepal is famous, as the world's only Hindu Kingdom.
identification of Himwatkhanda-Nepal is associated with the ancient Vedic Hindu religion. May all be happy in the world and let no one suffer from disease and be sad. May no one keep ill will towards another being? May all be liberal and compassionate? 'Basudhaiv Kutumbakam'. All humans of the world are our relativesMay all receive equal amount of food, relation and shelter. Let us become a liberal character of compassion and be active for omnipresent. May all worlds be well? 'OM- Shanti' isVedic Hindu customs cleansed indicative. The welfare and happiness of all is the supreme system which is the belief of the Vedic Hindu society. Dr. Basudev Krishna Shastri writes, "Hindus worship the Sun. The light that emanates from Sun is common for all. Without water no living being can survive. This is everyone's right. Such things are beyond divisions, and consumed by all as per their necessity. For the prosperity of human life there must remain equal right and prerogative among us. No one should be hindered from contributing to their nation. So it is mentioned in the Veda, 'Let us all rise for national awareness.'" This shows that Hindu religion is the vehicle that would show path to all human societies.Bramha- Bishnu-Maheshwor (the three Lords) is the guidance of Vedic Hindu life. In the ancient, Vedic Hindu religions the supreme is the ocean where anyone can swim anyhow.
United HinduFront defines- The word "Veda" means knowledge, or wisdom. "Anta" means the
culmination. The philosophical school of Vedanta represents the very highest teaching on the nature of man, God and creation in the whole of Sanatana Dharma-Hinduism. Even more, Vedanta represents the highest philosophical and spiritual teachings on earth. Vedanta is the
culmination of all divine and human wisdom. An Indian  Cultural analyst writes-'There is another hymn in Atharva Veda stating that we are all co-workers for prosperity and make riches flow amongst the people on the path of Dharma and Rta (A.V 1-15-2, 4). There is also a common prayer in Rig-Veda for the welfare of all human beings. We should create concord amongst the human beings, love each other as the cow loves the calf born to her, we all speak gently and in a friendly manner, let our water store be common and common also our share of food. Morning and evening let there be loving heart in all of us (R.V 10-191-2 to 4), (A.V 3-30-1 to 7).' In the Vedas scientists are described as men and women of absolute self-control, truthful with scientific outlook and destroyers of miseries. With the help of these scientists one could travel far on the earth and also in the sky through conveyances, which run and touch the middle region
A Scholar Prem Sabhlok quotes- 'Rig-Veda 1-164-46 and Y.V 32-1 clearly mention that God is "One"; wise men call Brahman by different names. The souls in all human beings are the subtle particles (ansh) of the same Supreme Soul- Paramatma. Since the entire cosmos and universe both visible and invisible continues to expand and is described as Brahamand so the Vedic metaphysicists and wise sages (rsis and munnies) found an appropriate epithet for the nameless God as Brahman. In the Rig Veda He is also mentioned as Vishnu- one who spread in Viswa. In Yajur and Atharva Vedas epithets for God are mentioned as Shiva, Shankar Brahma and Shambhu- pure and auspicious. Upanishads describe Nirguna Brahma- the ineffable God as, "Whole is that, whole too is this and from the whole, whole cometh and take whole, yet whole remains."A few Vedic hymns can be mentioned for proper understanding of Nirguna Brahma who is the Universal God. Rig Veda 6-15-13, 14 mentions that He is a pure illuminator, unifier, remover of all miseries, commands all to observe non-violence and other rules of righteousness, which are a-priori principles beyond any sense experiences'.-
An American Scholar Dr Hiro Badlani writes in his book-'Hinduism: Path of the Ancient Wisdom'- 'The word Veda originate from the root Vid, which means 'to know'. The Veda scriptures are considered to be the divine knowledge perceived by the ancient sages, Rishis. The great truth which is remains unchanged even today. Hinduism is a vastly liberal religion. It openly and fervently uncurious and tolerates differences of opinion, use of discretion, and interpretation based on one's own circumstances and perception. In Hindu philosophy, 'Consciousness' is considered as a Divine Awareness' behind all the activity.'
Henry David Thoreau, American Thinker & Author writes- 'Whenever I have read any part of the Vedas, I have felt that some unearthly and unknown light illuminated me. In the great teaching of the Vedas, there is no touch of sectarianism. It is of all ages, climbs, and nationalities and is the royal road for the attainment of the Great Knowledge. When I read it, I feel that I am under the spangled heavens of a summer night.' Mark Twain had expressed- 'Land of religions, cradle of human race, birthplace of human speech, grandmother of legend, great grandmother of tradition. The land that all men desire to see and having seen once even by a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of the rest of the globe combined.'
An analyst Agniveer Agni expresses- 'Vedas, the first texts of humanity, contain seeds of all forms of knowledge – spiritual or material. And hence it is obvious that there is no possibility of contradiction between claims of Vedas and deductions of science. Unlike other so-called holy texts Vedas do not demand blind belief on unobservable. So there is no blind insistence on belief in any avatar, prophet, god, son of god, mythology or historical claims to avoid some hell-like place and seek some heaven-like holiday spot. On contrary, the Vedic principle is to explore higher levels of truth in most unbiased manner and be honest to the results of this exploration. Science and Vedas go hand in hand.
Thus the approach of Vedas is way different from rest of the religious products with whom Vedas are often wrongly clustered. Vedas do not spoon-feed. They don't expect you to find truths of nature and world by memorizing certain verses. On contrary, Vedas urge humans to put efforts, conduct experiments, reflect upon those experiments and discover wisdom by making best use of this laboratory called life. And in the journey towards more and more advanced experiments you conduct, Vedas stand with you as a trusted guide, coach and mentor.
Vedic Hindu ancient religion is the devotee of Panchadev (the five Gods).  'OM' is the follower of Vedic Hindu Panchadev. A suffering man will remember one of the Pachayan Devs (the five Gods).Panchayan means- it is compulsory to worship the Gods Ganesha, Devi, Surya, Shiva and Bishnu. If one of them is discriminated while carrying out the ritual of worship then the worship will not be complete. However, some Hindu communities have developed their own definition which has created controversy in the ancient Hindu beliefs. We are all the same. We Hindus and Buddhists do not want to invite controversy and dispute. Nepal is stable as a Hindu and Buddhist nation. Our respect to our compatriot is based on the ancient Vedic Hindu religion. Our concern and that of Buddhists' corresponds to each other. Goddess Kali is worshipped by all Hindus as a manifestation of Shakti - the fierce destroyer of all evil. Her peaceful manifestation is Goddess Durga. Like God and Goddess, Cow is known as a shrine for all Hindus and the Buddhists. The cow was venerated as the mother goddess in the early Mediterranean civilizations. The cow became important in Nepal & India, first in the Vedic period (1500 - 900 BCE).  The lord Bhishma also observes that the cow acts as a surrogate mother by providing milk to human beings for the whole life. The cow is truly the mother of the world. Cows as Gifts of all gifts, the cow is still considered the highest in rural Nepal, India and the Hindu world. So the holy animal- 'COW' has declared a National animal in Nepal.

'Athmana Pratikulani Paresam nasamacharet' meaning, 'Don't do so for others which you dislike to do or talk'. This is the chief policy of Hinduism. But, a concerning crisis seen in the Hindu communities is the growth of Vaisnav religion, Krishna Pranami, Jain, Shikh along with different definitions and interpretations of religious Gurus has created crisis in the Hindu communities. This has plunged the Hindu religion into controversy. There have been foul attempts to create artificial lacking in the 'OMKAR' (followers of OM). The Cosmic Word OM becomes the raft of knowledge. According to Yajur Veda XL-17, this word OM is Brahma Itself. "OM Khamma Brahma"- OM Thy name is Brahma. Through this Word, He not only created Prakrti and Universe but also protects the same with the divine energy coming out of Shabad Brahma. This cosmic word OM is from the root Ava (to protect).
A Spiritual Indian scholar Prem Sabhlok explans-'In the Vedas scientists are described as men and women of absolute self-control, truthful with scientific outlook and destroyers of miseries (R.V., 1-3-4). With the help of these scientists one could travel far on the earth and also in the sky through conveyances, which run and touch the middle region (R.V., 1-3-1, 6-22-2 and 1-22-2). Such scientists from both the sexes go across to distance places quickly like the mind and electricity (R.V., 1-71-9). In this hymn aircrafts and even space ships are hinted. These ashvinaus should be well versed in Physics, agricultural sciences (R.V. 4-57-5), medical sciences (R.V. 5-74-3), astronomy (S.V. 121) and other sciences'.

Another Vedic scholar Prem Kumar opined'The Sun never sets or rises and it is the earth, which rotates (Sama-Ved 121). The gravitational effect of solar system makes the earth stable (R.V.1-103-2, 1-115-4 and 5-81-2). The axle of the earth does not get rusted and the earth continues to revolve on its axle (R.V. 1-164-29). The science of Time and its subtle nature is described in (R.V.1-92-12 and 1-95-8). The need to study the properties of water, air and fire for discovering and manufacturing aircrafts, ships and other vehicles capable of moving in the firmament, land and water are mentioned in Rig Veda 1-3-1,2, 1-34-1, 1-140-1 and many other hymns. Reference to infinite number of both gross and subtle atoms and the energy principle as spirit of God in each atom is given in R.V. 5-47-2 and Sama Veda 222. Atoms and sub atomic particles are not inert and have unsuspected vitality owing to this energy principle. Physical sciences relating to agriculture, medicine, astronomy mathematics particularly algebra, toxicology etc. are described in R.V.1-71-9, 4-57-5,Sama Veda 121 and many other hymns'.

We are proud to be Nepali. We want to be free of foreign intervention pertaining to our national unity, our traditional culture, and we will be free. Since the ancient times democracy has been a system that has been exercised and recited in Himwatkhanda. We have been adopting as the chief policy of giving equal opportunity to all to exercise their freedom, and we have tried to provide food and shelter for all. Religious freedom is our belief. Everyone has the right to follow their own religion. However, by showing the attraction of money, Christians have been alluring people to convert their religion; they have become one of the destroyers the foundation of Hindu religion, which we regard as enemies. Against such people all Hindu world must unite. We must all know that to bring secularism is to invite religious terrorism and civil war. Regardless of who we are; Rai, Limbu, Magar, Gurung, Newar, Brahman, Chetri, Kami, Damai, Sarki, Maithali, Bhojpuri, Awadhi among others, we are all either Hindu or Buddhist. Some Sherpa, Tamang and Newars are affiliated to Buddhism. No matter who follows what Pashupatinath and Swayambunath lay in the same world?

Mass demonstration n Assembly gherao for demand
@ Compulsory to admission of Govt. Employees children in govt. Schools.
On 8th December at Bhubaneswar...

Odisha was virtually waiting to see this happen. At least two inmates died every 10 days in Odisha jails last year. The State dubiously topped the country with a high of 44 unnatural deaths of jail inmates in 2014 and Uttar Pradesh with around half the number followed it.

However, death of an undertrial prisoner in the high-profile Jharpada Central Jail has virtually unlocked the Pandora's box of goings-in inside State jails when Odisha was bracketed along with Arunachal Pradesh in the country with minimum medical inspections.

Medical inspections last year in Odisha jails were only four in every hundred days. This revelation was made by Prison Statistics of India (PSI) – 2014, which was released recently by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

As per the NCRB data, when Odisha saw just 15 medical inspections across the jails in 365 days in 2014, Uttar Pradesh ensured around 498 visits last year.

Moreover, when nationally medical inspections account for over 41 per cent of total jail inspections, the corresponding proportion in Odisha is a mere 9 per cent. What makes this a grave slip-up is, in Odisha for a whopping 115 jail inmates there is only one medical staff. The reason: Of the sanctioned around 90 medical officers, only 41 are in position.

Human rights activists claim that most of the 43 natural deaths of inmates in jails in Odisha last year were due to medical negligence, but jail authorities in the garb of 'manufactured' medical history of inmates could dodge the rights panel radar.

The slipshod in jails inspections in the State extends even beyond that of the medical arena. When for every 119 jail inmates the State has only one correctional staff, Odisha along with Sikkim is the only State nationally to virtually record zero visits by any correctional expert/psychiatrist visitor to jails last year.

If NCRB report is any indication, the State cuts a sorry figure nationally in almost all such inspections mandated under Sections 59 of the Prisons Act 1894  to ensure protection of human rights of jail inmates. For instance, even in the routine inspections purportedly undertaken by executive officers led by District Magistrates (DM), the State with mere 10 visits in every 100 days managed to stay ahead of only few north-eastern States and Union territories. Chhattisgarh ensured around 123 executive visits in 2014 against mere 38 by Odisha.

More significant is when a State like Bihar recorded at least one judicial inspection of jails every day last year, Odisha could arrange for a measly three visits in as many as ten days, reveals the PSI-2014.

It's worth mentioning that when the Odisha Government spends around Rs 27, 908 per inmate, each inmate fetches revenue of Rs 751 for the Government through sale of goods produced by them. Interestingly, Bihar spent around Rs 57,700 on each inmate and in return each inmate brought revenue worth Rs 5,032 for the Government. The sorry state of jail affairs could further be well-ascertained from the fact of only 36 CCTVs in 91 jails in Odisha against a whopping 599 CCTVs for a mere 58 jails in Bihar.

Bhubaneswar,August19:Block grant school teachers association today protested in front of the State Assembly today, demanding the Grant-in-order 1994 in all eligible schools.

According to sources, four thousand school teachers across the state has been gheraoed the state assembly and continued protest against the demand.

The teachers and teachers' association of State staged a huge rally  demanding the government aid to the block grant schools and salary as per the government rule.

"The protest will continue till the government doesn't give in to our demands, after August 20, we will demonstrate in front of the quarters of the MLAs", said Prakash Chandra Mohanty, covener of Odisha Vidyalaya Sikshak Mahasangh.

School and Mass Education minister Debi Prasad Mishra said we are discussing the matter in a high level meeting, and then only a final decision would be taken under the finance minister chief minister's directive.

It may be noted here that the teachers have been staging protests since August 10 demanding fulfillment of their dues, which resulted in no-classes in more than 2,000 schools.

Mail from Nepal:

Jacket of the book.

A timely book by Shamsul Islam demolishes stereotypes associated with the role of Muslim masses during Partition

The standard narrative about the Partition, actively propagated by the Hindu communalists and innocently believed by most Hindus, puts the onus on the Muslim masses that supported the Muslim League's demand for a separate country. It is not uncommon to hear people referring to an area where Muslims live in substantial numbers as "Pakistan". However, as a recently published book tells us, the reality is very different.

"Muslims Against Partition", written by Shamsul Islam, the multi-talented theatre activist, anti-communal propagandist and political scientist, and published by Pharos Media and Publishing Pvt. Ltd., offers an eye-opening account of the way a large number of Muslim political leaders, thinkers and organisations opposed the idea of Pakistan and actively worked against it. Renowned historian Harbans Mukhia has penned a thought-provoking foreword wherein he praises the writer for drawing our attention to the ambivalent attitude of the Congress to the question of communalism as it had many leaders who were sympathetic to the "exclusivist Hindu cause".

All of us know about prominent Muslim leaders like Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, M. A. Ansari, Asaf Ali and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who fiercely opposed the communal politics of the Muslim League. However, since they were in the Congress, their opposition to the creation of a separate homeland for the subcontinent's Muslims is generally ignored. What is remembered is the fact that the Muslim League led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah was successful in mobilising the Muslim elite as well as Muslim masses in support of its Pakistan demand and had won most of the Muslim seats in the 1946 election to provincial assemblies.

However, most people remain unaware that this fact conceals a vital aspect of reality. The Sixth Schedule of the 1935 Act had restricted the franchise on the basis of tax, property and educational qualifications, thus excluding the mass of peasants, the majority of shopkeepers and traders, and many others. Thus, as Shamsul Islam informs us quoting from Austin Granville's book on the Indian Constitution, only 28.5 per cent of the adult populations of the provinces could cast their votes in the 1946 provincial assembly elections. This makes it amply clear that the Pakistan demand was not supported by the majority of Muslims because only a small percentage of the Muslim population was eligible to vote.

Nationalist Muslims had started expressing themselves as early as 1883 when the Congress was not even born and nationalism was in the early stages of its inception. Shamsul Islam's book contains a very informative chapter on Muslim patriotic individuals and organisations. It tells us the inspiring story of Shibli Nomani who established a National School in Azamgarh in 1883 and actively opposed the Muslim League agenda of cooperation with the British and opposition to the Hindus. Nomani, who died a year after Jinnah's entry into the League in 1913, castigated the organisation because "everyday the belief which is propagated, the emotion which is instigated is (that) Hindus are suppressing us and we must organise ourselves." In a chapter titled "Two-Nation Theory: Origin and Hindu-Muslim Variants", Shamsul Islam underlines the fact that much before the Muslim League came up with the two-nation theory, leaders such as Madan Mohan Malaviya, B. S. Moonje and Lajpat Rai were championing the cause of a Hindu nation. Much before them, Raj Narain Basu (1826-1899), maternal grandfather of Aurobindo Ghosh, and his close associate Naba Gopal Mitra (1840-1894) had emerged as the co-fathers of Hindu nationalism. Eminent historian R. C. Majumdar has remarked that "Naba Gopal forestalled Jinnah's theory of two nations by more than half a century". So, the onus for spreading the belief that Hindus and Muslims constituted two separate nations that could not peacefully co-exist with each other should first be placed at the door of Hindu leaders.

Of all the Muslim leaders who were opposed to the idea of Partition, the case of Allah Bakhsh seems to be most interesting.

When British Prime Minister Winston Churchill made a derogatory reference to the Indian freedom struggle and Quit India Movement, Allah Bakhsh, who as head of the Ittehad Party was the Premier (chief minister) of Sind, decide to return his titles of Khan Bahadur and Order of the British Empire (OBE). Consequently, he was dismissed by the Viceroy. Later, he was assassinated by supporters of the Muslim League and his murder paved the way for the entry of the separatist organisation into Sind. The rest, as they say, is history.
