The Centre will send a team of officials to Malda to ascertain facts about the recent mob violence, as political parties trade allegations over the incident in West Bengal, where assembly elections are now months away.

Here are the latest developments in this story

• Government sources said the Centre could also look into allegations that lawmakers and political activists were involved in the attack by a lakh-strong crowd of protesters on a a police station and vehicles belonging to the Border Security Force.

• It is also expected to investigate the role of a Muslit organisation called the Idra-e-Sharia, which had called the march that turned violent in Malda, in protest against a Hindu right-wing leader's alleged comments about Prophet Mohammad in Uttar Pradesh last month.

• A BJP delegation met Home Minister Rajnath Singh today demanded a high-level probe. It included a three-member fact-finding team that was not allowed to go further than the Malda railway station by the Mamata Banerjee administration yesterday.

• Senior leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, who has charge of West Bengal in the BJP, alleged today that "local Trinamool Congress and Janata Dal United workers were involved" in the Malda violence and attacked the state government and local administration for failing to stop violence.

• Janata Dal United lawmaker Ghulam Rasool, who allegedly has links with the Idra-e-Sharia, has denied allegations that he was part of mob. "I was not there. My name has been dragged into it," said Mr Rasool, a Rajya Sabha MP, linking the allegations to the Bengal elections.

• The BJP's Siddharth Nath Singh said Mr Rasool's "role in Malda has been exposed," and demanded that top JDU leaders Nitish Kumar and SHarad Yadav act against their party lawmaker.

• The BJP has also accused the Mamata Banerjee government of protecting anti-social elements. "Mamata Banerjee and her government are playing dirty vote bank politics in Bengal. Anti-social elements are being protected by them," Siddharth Nath SIngh said.

• Main opposition party in Bengal, the CPM has also attacked the Mamata Banerjee government for failure contain Sunday's violence. A CPM team of politicians led by MP Md Salim was also stopped from going to Kaliachak yesterday.

• Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress has accused the BJP and its ideological mentor the RSS of trying to turn a "criminal issue" into a "communal" one in view of the assembly elections. Trinamool lawmaker Derek O'Brien alleged that the BJP leaders were stopped from going to Kaliachak as they wanted to "fan the fire" and polarize voters.

• Lalu Prasad Yadav of the RJD, BJP-baiter and ally of the JDU in Bihar has too hit out at the BJP. "The BJP tries to create disturbances and thus target vote bank... The RSS-BJP earns through communalism.  Theywant to divide the nation," he said, calling the Malda incident "condemnable."

A vast, green expanse dotted with mosquito net covered plots along the serpentine road near Malda's Golapganj stands as a forbidden land for the outsider. Merely taking in the scenery can get you killed, as gun-toting men are watching over this territory, which is largely free of administrative shackles.

Here, locals are involved in large-scale opium poppy cultivation - an illegal trade that dominates the rural economy of notorious Kaliachak-III block, which last week saw rioting and rampage. Narcotics money is at the heart of lawlessness in this West Bengal district bordering Bangladesh.

The police say a large portion of this drug money goes into buying sophisticated weapons smuggled through the porous Bangladesh border and running hundreds of unrecognised madrassas in the Muslim-dominated (a little over 52 per cent, on last count) district.

"It is true that the region is an epicentre of illegal drug trade and a counterfeit currency racket because of its strategic location along the international border," West Bengal director general of police, Intelligence Branch, Raj Kanojia told Mail Today. "The district administration is looking into it, especially after the Kaliachak violence. It has taken enough action and now it will get doubled following the police station ransacking incident."

Local officials say the Kaliachak violence on January 3 was a pre-planned attack by Muslim groups under the garb of protesting against the hate speech of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha leader Kamlesh Tiwari. More than 35 vehicles were torched, government properties ransacked and the Kaliachak police station set on fire.

"The entire violence was carried out to terrorise the local administration which is trying to crack down on the poppy empire, take revenge against the police and destroy crucial evidence at the police station," a police official said, requesting anonymity.

Barely 8 km from the border, even children and youngsters collect white latex from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) - a mother product for producing heroin.

Border areas like Golapganj, Baliadanga, Kaliachak, Mohabbatpur, Mothabari and Danga are now the epicentre of anti-national activities, thanks to the flourishing drug trade. Be it peddling of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) involving the local youth, illegal migration, drug and arms supply or smuggling, Malda is a bustling hub.

"The place has become a mini Afghanistan. It is a very sensitive matter and the Assembly election is knocking on the door. All I can say is that the situation in Kaliachak is really alarming," said a senior Trinamool Congress leader, requesting anonymity for political reasons. He said recently, a car had been caught in the area packed with cash, but had to be released after officials got a call from somebody influential.

Crime rate

The district police, along with the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, had started tightening the noose, significantly reducing the crime rate in these areas in the last one year. This, officials and many residents say, resulted in the Kaliachak rioting, with criminals sending a keep-your-hands-off-ourbusiness message to authorities.

CCTV footage of the Kaliachak police station is being examined to identify people who were involved in the violence and ransacked the police barrack.

As one enters the troubled belt, one can spot gun-toting locals protecting the territory from any interloper, green flags with crescents fluttering in the villages. The cultivation begins November-December and the crop is harvested around February-March.

"We sell 1 kg of opium latex for `60,000 to `70,000 during season. Each poppy flower produces about 30 gm of latex. We spend the rest of the year in small-time jobs. These three months of poppy cultivation is our sole sustenance," said a local young man who identified himself as Imtiaz.

Opium latex contains approximately 12 per cent of the analgesic alkaloid morphine, which is processed chemically to produce heroin and other synthetic opioids to be supplied in India and abroad. The old, manual way of obtaining the latex is to scratch ("score") the immature seed pods (fruits) by hand; the latex leaks out and dries to a sticky yellowish residue that is later scraped off and dried.Imtiaz said buyers make a beeline during the season to collect opium latex. They come from various places. Now, heroin is also produced locally, in various pockets of neighbouring Murshidabad district.

Malda district magistrate Sharad Devidi said: "The matter has come to our knowledge this year. We have taken action against this poppy cultivation jointly with the help of the district police. But I can't share the details with you." The Malda DM's claim fell flat as locals confirmed that police forces were hardly seen in the region during the actual season of cultivation. The drug mafia, they allege, are hand-in-glove with security personnel. Sources allege that even some cops have land in and around Golapganj and Kaliachak belts which they have leased for poppy cultivation to locals for good money.

"Malda district administration knows everything but they are just sitting idle for the sake of their (Trinamool Congress') vote-bank politics. They are protecting antinational elements at the cost of national security and overall lawand-order situation of the district," said Malda BJP secretary Biswapriyo Roychowdhury.

According to sources in the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB), a kg of heroin costs about `6 lakh. Places like Golapganj, Sujapur, Baishnabnagar and Kaliachak are geographically suitable for this opium poppy cultivation because of their closeness to the barbedbut-porous international border.

Operation

"The operation is already underway. Everything will be destroyed during the season. We had destroyed about 700 acres of land cultivating opium poppy just in Malda last year. The total land, as far as destroying opium poppy cultivation was concerned last year, was little over 1,000 acres in the state," said outgoing NCB zonal director in West Bengal Subrata Biswas. That is about 1,000 football fields of tomorrow's heroin.

He said producing heroin from opium latex did not involve any sophisticated process, making it easy for locals to get involved in the nexus.

Terming Malda the only "critical area" in the state for poppy cultivation, Biswas said the state government was doing its best to destroy the drug trade.

"We have been able to extensively curb down the practices in Birbhum district in the last few years. The state excise department is also very active, besides the police and the BSF. Only in 2010-'11, nearly 6,000 acres (cultivating opium poppy) was destroyed in Birbhum," the former NCB chief claimed.

Last evening, in his speech to the nation from the Oval Office, President Obama reminded Americans that "Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, our co-workers, our sports heroes — and, yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country." In his concluding remarks, the President told viewers that our nation was "founded upon a belief in human dignity — that no matter who you are, or where you come from, or what you look like, or what religion you practice, you are equal in the eyes of God and equal in the eyes of the law." Of the many notable moments from President Barack Obama's final State of the Union address Tuesday night, there was one in particular that stood out: Obama's challenge to Republican candidates who have lambasted his commitment to defeating the Islamic State group, also known as ISIL or ISIS.

"When politicians insult Muslims, when a mosque is vandalized, or a kid bullied, that doesn't make us safer," Obama said. "That's not telling it like it is. It's just wrong. It diminishes us in the eyes of the world. It makes it harder to achieve our goals. And it betrays who we are as a country."

The president's passionate plea to stem the climate of Islamophobia that has bubbled up since shootings in San Bernardino, California, is extremely significant, and not only because it was the top moment on Facebook during his entire address.

With those six sentences, Obama not only challenged the vicious narrative of intolerance that has been front and center on the Republican campaign trail. He also made one of the single best foreign policy arguments for defeating ISIS.

Here's why: At the moment, the United States and our allies are mired in a vicious cycle that looks something like this:

       • ISIS wages a terrorist attack on the West.

       • The West bombs ISIS in Syria and Iraq in response.

       • Refugees flee Syria and Iraq as a result.

       • Refugees confront a climate of Islamophobia when they arrive in the West.

       • ISIS uses this climate to radicalize and recruit new soldiers.

       • Rinse and repeat.

This is, of course, a simplification, but it serves to highlight the direct connection between U.S. foreign policy abroad and Islamophobia back home, and the extent to which the domestic climate of hostility toward Muslims plays a direct role in America's susceptibility to future terrorist attacks.

Since the San Bernardino shooting, America has experienced an unprecedented rise in Islamophobia, the likes of which we have not witnessed since 9/11.

"The climate for Muslims living in the West these days is as bad as it was after 9/11," prominent Egyptian-American journalist and scholar Mona Eltahawy recently told Mic. "Women who are visibly Muslim through the various veils they wear are bearing the brunt of this."

Indeed, the data bear this out: There were 18 attacks against Muslims in the United States between the San Bernardino attack and Dec. 17, and 38 since the Paris terrorist attack, a sharp three-fold rise over the average, according to data from the FBI (a full list of attacks can be found here). That comes against a backdrop in which Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has called for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the country. Ben Carson declared Muslims unfit to be president, and dozens of Republican governors have come outagainst accepting Syrian refugees in their states.

ISIS and other terrorist groups take full advantage of this hostile climate to garner new recruits. As counterterrorism analyst Harleen Gambhir wrote in the Washington Post, "The group calculates that a small number of attackers can profoundly shift the way that European society views its 44 million Muslim members and, as a result, the way European Muslims view themselves. Through this provocation, it seeks to set conditions for an apocalyptic war with the West."

Look no further than the revelation that Somali terror group al-Shabab used audio of Trump in a recent video to recruit new soldiers to see how this strategy is playing itself out.

Breaking the cycle: The U.S. needs to break this vicious cycle if it hopes to defeat ISIS.

Despite some of his critics on the left, who have called for the U.S. to stop bombing ISIS in Syria and Iraq altogether, Obama has made the calculation that the military campaign is necessary to provide some semblance of stability and prevent the nation from getting dragged into another ground war in the Middle East. With a full-scale invasion and occupation off the table, reducing the climate of Islamophobia that Muslims and new refugees face when they flee to the West represents one of the most important steps the U.S. can take to undercut the ideological underpinnings of ISIS' strategy.

To do so will require the recognition that Muslims themselves bear the brunt of ISIS' brutality. It will require us to acknowledge that the overwhelming majority of Syrian refugees are well-educated and hardworking young people who are fleeing the very same terrorists America is fighting against. And it will require us to ramp down the fiery rhetoric and counter the nagging narrative that equates the world's 1.6 billion Muslims with terrorism.

Obama has spoken out against Islamophobia before, most notably in his Oval Office address to the nation in the immediate aftermath of the San Bernardino shooting. But the fact that the president made this a focus of his final State of the Union, with millions of viewers watching at home and the added symbolism of a Syrian refugee looking on as one of his guests, will serve to build newfound trust among Muslims in the West, and in so doing, help break the vicious cycle and defeat ISIS.

Whether Obama's words translate to a sea change nationwide, or pressure Republican candidates to scale back their Islamophobic rhetoric on the campaign trail, remains to be seen. But with the stakes so high, the president's six sentences are an important first step.

What the President didn't say is that while the recent mass killing in San Bernardino, California was conducted by a married couple who were Muslim, the Muslim community itself has been under relentless assault by homegrown religious extremists since the attacks on the World Trade towers on September 11, 2001.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), mosques in 31 states in America have been the targets of firebombs, arson, acid attacks, gunfire, hate speech or other forms of religious intolerance since 2005. In Joplin, Missouri, a mosque's sign was torched in 2008. Four years later, its roof was set on fire with the perpetrator caught on a surveillance video. One month later, in August 2012, the mosque was burned to the ground.

In 2008, Chris Rodda, reporting for the Huffington Post, wrote about Muslim babies and children being gassed in an attack on a mosque in Dayton, Ohio during the same week that a DVD of the race-baiting, anti-Muslim documentary Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West was mailed to thousands of households in Ohio and inserted into newspapers around the state. Quoting an email she had received with an eyewitness report, Rodda relayed:

"She told me that the gas was sprayed into the room where the babies and children were being kept while their mothers prayed together their Ramadan prayers. Panicked mothers ran for their babies, crying for their children so they could flee from the gas that was burning their eyes and throats and lungs. She grabbed her youngest in her arms and grabbed the hand of her other daughter, moving with the others to exit the building and the irritating substance there.

"The paramedic said the young one was in shock, and gave her oxygen to help her breathe. The child couldn't stop sobbing.

"This didn't happen in some far away place — but right here in Dayton, and to my friends. Many of the Iraqi refugees were praying together at the Mosque Friday evening. People that I know and love.

"I am hurt and angry. I tell her this is not America. She tells me this is not Heaven or Hell — there are good and bad people everywhere.

"She tells me that her daughters slept with her last night, the little one in her arms and sobbing throughout the night. She tells me she is afraid, and will never return to the mosque, and I wonder what kind of country is this where people have to fear attending their place of worship?"

The Obsession DVDs were distributed seven weeks before the Presidential election of 2008 in swing voter states when rumors were being fanned that Barack Obama was a Muslim. Approximately 100 newspapers and magazines in the U.S., including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Miami Herald, Philadelphia Inquirer, and St. Petersburg Times, distributed millions of these DVDs. Including the direct mail campaign, 28 million DVDs flooded households in key states.

In 2010, we became curious as to where the massive amount of money came from to finance the production of this race-baiting film and the enormous amount of funds needed to distribute 28 million DVDs. All that was known at that point was that a front group called the Clarion Fund had its name on the production. Where it got its money was a dark secret.

The Clarion Fund had only a virtual office address in New York City with no physical presence and no employees on site. The documents the Clarion Fund had submitted to the IRS to obtain its tax-exempt status showed it had its own obsession with secrecy. One requirement it enforced on its vendors read:

"At all times, whether during or after the provision of services to Clarion, Service Provider shall keep in confidence and shall not disclose or use, for his or another's benefit, any nonpublic knowledge, data, material, document or other information of any type that is related to Clarion, or its subsidiaries, directors, members, managers, agents, employees or other affiliates or that Service Provider otherwise acquires in the course of providing services (collectively, the 'Confidential Information.')."

What President Obama Didn't Address: Who's Funding the Hate Campaign Against Muslims?

The Muslim community itself has been under relentless assault by homegrown religious extremists since the attacks on the World Trade towers.

The Obsession film content was suspiciously slick. The first half shows serial scenes of suicide bombers and human carnage at the hands of Muslims. The second half of the film intersperses clips of Hitler, Hitler Youth, or Hitler analogies with Muslim crowds that include young children with fists in the air calling for death to westerners. While the film concedes that not all Muslims want to kill, it quantifies the number that do (without any substantiation) as 100 to 150 million Muslims, i.e., 10 to 15 percent of 1 billion Muslims.

After much painstaking research, we tracked down the money trail and reported the following:

"The 28 million DVDs were produced at a cost of $15,676,181 by Artist Direct Media which does mass manufacturing of CDs and DVDs with volume discounts. The big media buy for Sunday newspaper insertions ran up the tidy tab of $719,436 and was conducted by NSA Media, a unit of the global ad giant, Interpublic Group, parent of McCann-Erikson. That figure seems decidedly on the light side so there may be other funding sources involved that have not yet surfaced. (NSA Media is a powerful ad buyer, representing some of the biggest print buyers and consumer brands in the country, which might help explain why so few questions were asked by the largest newspapers about this unseemly project.) The full tab, and then some, was paid by the super secretive libertarian nonprofit, Donors Capital Fund. In 2008, Clarion Fund became Donors Capital Fund's largest grantee by a large margin, receiving $17,778,600. That sum constituted 96 per cent of all funds received by Clarion in 2008 and 9 times its revenue in 2007."

And who was behind Donors Capital Fund? All roads led to Charles Koch, the right wing billionaire. (Read our full report here.) While we were able to link Donors Capital to the funding of the film, we were not able to pinpoint the names of the individual(s) who gave the money to Donors Capital and earmarked it for producing and distributing the film.

David Horowitz, the anti-Muslim writer at Frontpage Magazine took the Obsession film on a college road show that dovetailed with its distribution through newspapers and direct mail. During the fall of 2007, and continuing into 2008, Horowitz promoted an "Islamo-Fascism Awareness" program to more than 100 college campuses, with the film Obsessionmade available for viewing. The David Horowitz Freedom Center, a non profit, has received major funding from the same parties that have funded Donors Capital Fund and its sister organization, Donors Trust. Major among those donors is the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Muslims make up approximately one percent of the U.S. population and their "voting patterns generally mirror the broader American population. American Muslims are Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, liberals and conservatives. There is no one political platform or agenda for those who practice the religion of Islam in the United States."

The majority of Muslims have been living peacefully in America since the 16th century, but some well-financed campaigns by dark money are stereotyping all Muslims as terrorists while Muslims are, themselves, being terrorized at their houses of worship. Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has now picked up the stereotyping cudgel and appears to be fomenting the hate with a pledge to close some mosques and put American Muslims on a registry if he's elected President.

On November 23, the Dallas Morning News ran an editorial which carried these prophetic words after an anti-Islam group showed up at a mosque in Irving, Texas with assault rifles(it's legal to open-carry guns in Texas):

"This is America. Free speech and the right to protest are our calling cards.

"But AR-15s at a place of worship? That is out of bounds, and it shows how very close we are to chaos."

It takes very little for hate to turn to murder. In February of this year, a white middle-aged male in Chapel Hill, North Carolina shot and killed three Muslim students execution style. Two were set to study to become dentists. According to the New Yorker Magazine, the killer, Craig Hicks, wrote the following on his Facebook page: "I hate Islam just as much as Christianity, but they have the right to worship in this country just as much as any others do." According to the article, Hicks also wrote that he hoped that Jews, Christians, and Muslims might "exterminate" each other.

The President's address last night was a deeply inadequate response to the hate fomenting in our nation and the mega amounts of dark money that want to keep it alive through the 2016 Presidential election.

It doesn't matter that many of these Jewish or Christian-owned businesses and colleges oppose abortion on demand, handing out condoms or providing sterilization as a "health" service.

Obama doesn't care. He is willing to use the full force of the federal government to force these religious enterprises to support the abortion industry. The abortion mandate wasn't even in the original bill that was signed into law. It was deliberately mandated by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius with the stamp of approval of Barack Hussein Obama.

But, it's far worse than just Obamacare. Obama is carrying on what amounts to a Jihad against non-Islamic religious groups – both Jews and Christians.

Remember what Obama told his supporters in April of 2008: That Christians "cling to guns or religion" and have an "antipathy to people who aren't like them"?

In other words, if you don't support his radical leftist agenda, you're a racist and a religious nut.

His hatred of non-Islamic religions is obvious. In May of 2009, Obama refused to host services for the National Day of Prayer. But, he regularly holds Muslim celebrations at the White House.  

Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton love the Muslim Brotherhood which recently crucified secularists in front of the presidential palace in Egypt.

He also routinely distorts American history by claiming that Islam has played an important positive role in our nation's history! That's a complete lie! Our nation's first foreign war – launched by Thomas Jefferson – was against the Islamist Barbary Pirates!

In October of 2010, Obama began deliberately deleting "the Creator" whenever he was quoting the Declaration of Independence. He's done this seven times so far – so we know it wasn't a one-time gaffe. He believes that rights are granted by an all-powerful federal government – not by God.

In November of 2011, Obama issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation without mentioning religion or God! Any patriotic American knows that the Pilgrims weren't giving thanks to the federal government for their blessings – they were thanking their merciful God for their lives and religious liberty! They weren't expressing gratitude to a welfare state, but to the freedom that God had granted them in the New World.

In January 2012, the Obama Administration argued that the First Amendment provides no protection for churches or synagogues in hiring their pastors and rabbis.

Earlier this year, Christian historian David Barton compiled a lengthy list of Obama's anti-religious policies and statements. He's called Obama the most "biblically-hostile" president in U.S. history. We agree wholeheartedly with Barton. Why is this important? It's important because Obama directly threatens our religious liberties and the First Amendment's protection of free speech in America.

Obama is not only the most viciously anti-religious president in history, but he's turning out to be the most racially divisive one as well. In fact, he seems to deliberately try to provoke racial animosity. When he was running for office in 2008, he claimed to be a post-racial candidate. He lied.

Once he's back in office, he'll be totally unrestrained in his plans to bring our nation to moral and economic ruin. He's already done a pretty good job. Imagine what he'll do in four more years.

Keep in mind the following facts about Obama:  

1. Obama hates the military. He has sued in court to block a measure which extends early voting for members of the military!  This does away with the tradition for allowing special circumstances for military personnel in voting which dates back to the Civil War! And, he's using the power of the Department of Justice to attack states that are trying to enforce voter ID laws – to ensure honest elections!
2. Obama hates the U.S. Constitution. He believes it is a "living document" that is outdated and needs to be reinterpreted by liberal judges. That's why he ignores it whenever he wishes – and why he now has two anti-Constitution judges on the Supreme Court: Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. Both believe they have the right to decide what the Constitution means – not what the Founding Fathers meant when they wrote it!
3. Obama hates religious liberty. On August 1, the HHS Mandate went into effect requiring companies, including those religious organizations that have religious beliefs to the contrary, to provide abortion services to their employees.  Obama seems to forget the Constitution's First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech."
4. Obama loves Islam. His key role in the "Arab Spring" has caused governments en masse to turn to Sharia Law in the Middle East.  And, he's regularly betrayed Israel since he took office. His anti-Israel policies are worse than even Jimmy Carter.
5. Obama hates traditional marriage. He directed the Department of Justice to not defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) passed in 1996 and signed by then-President Clinton. Obama supports gay marriage – but during his 2008 campaign, he claimed he was against gay marriage.
6. Obama hates America as a force for freedom in the world. He intends on spending the next four years finishing off our nation. He'll rule by executive order, regulations, lawsuits, and entangle us in international treaties that will destroy our national sovereignty. In short, he'll rule America like his ideological buddy Hugo Chavez – the tyrant who runs Venezuela.
7. Obama hates capitalism – the economic system that made our nation the most prosperous in the history of mankind. He has a Marxist ideology that compels him to do everything in his power to destroy free enterprise and to remake America into a European welfare state.

Obama is a consistent and skilled liar who wants to rule our nation as a tyrant – one without any lawful accountability to the Constitution or to Congress. We must defeat him!

चुनावी राजनीति के महत्व को न नकारें, कामरेड

स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले आमचुनाव में, तत्कालीन भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी, सबसे बड़े विपक्षी दल के रूप में उभरी थी। उस काल में अमरीका में मैकार्थीवादी, कम्युनिस्टों को निशाना बना रहे थे और यहां भारत में, आरएसएस, शासक कांग्रेस पार्टी से यह वायदा कर रहा था कि वह साम्यवाद का सफाया करने में सरकार की मदद करेगा। आरएसएस चिंतक एमएस गोलवलकर ने अपनी पुस्तक 'बंच ऑफ थाट्स'में मुसलमानों और ईसाईयों के अलावा, साम्यवादियों को भी हिंदू राष्ट्र के लिए 'आतंरिक खतरा'निरूपित किया था।

तब से लेकर अब तक, गंगा में बहुत पानी बह चुका है। पिछले लोकसभा चुनाव (2014) में भारतीय जनता पार्टी सबसे बड़े दल के रूप में उभरी और उसने लोकसभा में साधारण बहुमत प्राप्त किया। अब देश पर भाजपा के नेतृत्व वाले एक बेमेल गठबंधन-जिसे राष्ट्रीय जनतांत्रिक गठबंधन (एनडीए)-कहा जाता है, का राज है। एनडीए में भाजपा का बोलबाला है और वह अपने पितृसंगठन आरएसएस के एजेंडे को लागू करने की हर संभव कोशिश कर रही है। इस पृष्ठभूमि में, भारत की सबसे बड़ी साम्यवादी पार्टी-भारतीय कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी (मार्क्सवादी)-की 21वीं कांग्रेस (अप्रैल 2015) में लिए गए निर्णयों पर चर्चा समीचीन होगी।

पार्टी के पूर्व महासचिव प्रकाश कारत ने इस कांग्रेस में हुए विचार-विमर्श और मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी की भविष्य की योजनाओं की झलक, अपने एक लेख 'विनिंग बैक द पीपुल' (द इंडियन एक्सप्रेस, 7 जनवरी, 2016) में दी है। इस लेख में बताया गया है कि मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी किन तत्वों व शक्तियों को भारतीय प्रजातंत्र के लिए बड़ा खतरा मानती है और उनसे किस तरह मुकाबला करने का इरादा रखती है। जहां कांग्रेस में हुए विचार-विनिमय के निष्कर्ष, हवा के एक ताज़ा झोंके के समान हैं और यह बतलाते हैं कि सीपीएम समय के साथ बदलने को तैयार है और मध्यमवर्ग व हाशिए पर पड़े समुदायों की ओर अपना हाथ बढ़ाना चाहती है, वहीं सांप्रदायिकता की राजनीति का पार्टी का विश्लेषण, चुनावी राजनीति को सांप्रदायिकता के खिलाफ संघर्ष के एक महत्वपूर्ण उपकरण के रूप में स्वीकार करने की हिचकिचाहट की ओर संकेत करता है।

कारत लिखते हैं, ''यह भ्रम है कि भाजपा को चुनाव में हराकर हम सांप्रदायिकता को पराजित कर सकते हैं।''यह बिलकुल सही है परंतु इसके अगले वाक्य से ज़ाहिर होता है कि मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी, सांप्रदायिक राजनीति को मज़बूत करने में चुनावी राजनीति की भूमिका को कम करके आंक रही है। कारत लिखते हैं, ''चुनाव में हार से आवश्यक रूप से सांप्रदायिक ताकतें कमज़ोर और अकेली नहीं पड़तीं।''सांप्रदायिक ताकतों के खिलाफ सतत संघर्ष की आवश्यकता से कोई इंकार नहीं कर सकता परंतु हमें इस तथ्य को स्वीकार करना ही होगा कि भाजपा की चुनावी सफलताओं ने सांप्रदायिक ताकतों को मज़बूती देने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई है। इसके विपरीत, चुनावों में हार से सांप्रदायिक एजेंडा कमज़ोर पड़ता है। क्या कोई इस तथ्य से इंकार कर सकता है कि अगर भाजपा, बिहार के 2015 विधानसभा चुनाव में विजय हासिल कर लेती तो सांप्रदायिक ताकतें और मज़बूत होतीं?

आज यदि देश में आरएसएस का एजेंडा खुल्लमखुल्ला लागू किया जा रहा है तो इसका एक महत्वपूर्ण कारण पहले 1998 और अब 2014 में भाजपा का सत्तासीन होना है। यह सही है कि सांप्रदायिक ताकतें, सामाजिक, शैक्षणिक व कई अन्य क्षेत्रों में सक्रिय हैं, वहीं यह भी सच है कि राज्यतंत्र, विशेषकर प्रशासन और पुलिस, में घुसपैठ कर वे अपनी शक्ति में आशातीत इज़ाफा करने में सफल हुई हैं। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि आरएसएस, केंद्र में भाजपा के 1996 और फिर 1998 में शासन में आने के पूर्व से अपना एजेंडा लागू करने में जुटा हुआ था परंतु महत्वपूर्ण यह है कि जब भी भाजपा सत्ता में आ जाती है, वह संघ परिवार के अन्य सदस्यों को उनकी गतिविधियां संचालित करने में पूरी मदद और प्रोत्साहन देती है। हिंदुत्ववादी शक्तियों में ''श्रम विभाजन''है और वे अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में संघ परिवार का एजेंडा लागू करती हैं। परंतु भाजपा के सत्ता में रहने से उन्हें बहुत लाभ होता है, इस तथ्य को नहीं भुलाया जाना चाहिए।

भाजपा के नेतृत्व वाले एनडीए के पिछले शासनकाल में किस तरह शिक्षा का जमकर भगवाकरण किया गया था, यह किसी से छिपा नहीं है। कामरेड कारत निश्चित तौर पर इस तथ्य से परिचित होंगे कि मई 2014 में मोदी सरकार के शासन में आने के बाद से, हिंदू राष्ट्रवाद के विघटनकारी एजेंडे को लागू करने की प्रक्रिया में तेज़ी आई है। देश में आतंक का वातावरण निर्मित कर दिया गया है और उदारवाद और अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता का गला घोंटा जा रहा है। सांप्रदायिक राजनीति के बढ़ते कदमों के कारण ही पुरस्कार वापसी का सिलसिला शुरू हुआ। यहां हमें यह भी नहीं भूलना चाहिए कि 1977 में गठित जनता पार्टी की सरकार में, भाजपा के पूर्व अवतार जनसंघ के तीन सदस्यों को कैबिनेट मंत्री बनाया गया था। यह स्पष्ट है कि भाजपा के शासन में आने से संघ के सदस्यों और उसकी विचारधारा में यकीन करने वालों के लिए मीडिया, शिक्षा व अन्य सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक क्षेत्रों में घुसपैठ करना आसान हो जाता है।

कामरेड कारत को यह नहीं भूलना चाहिए कि मई 2014 के बाद से, राष्ट्रीय महत्व के संस्थानों (भारतीय फिल्म व टेलीविजन संस्थान, भारतीय इतिहास अनुसंधान परिषद, नेशनल बुक ट्रस्ट आदि) पर हिंदू राष्ट्रवाद में यकीन करने वाले योजनाबद्ध ढंग से कब्ज़ा कर रहे हैं। इसके अलावा, गौमांस, लवजिहाद और घरवापसी जैसे मुद्दों को लेकर भी सांप्रदायिक अभियान चलाए जा रहे हैं।

कामरोडों की नई सोच का स्वागत है परंतु उन्हें भाजपा को सत्ता से दूर रखने को भी अपने लक्ष्यों में शामिल करना चाहिए। क्या मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी व अन्य वामपंथी दल यह भूल गए हैं कि यूपीए-1 शासनकाल में उन्होंने किस तरह से कांग्रेस को सही राह पर चलने के लिए मजबूर किया था और शासन की नीतियों में सकारात्मक बदलाव लाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका अदा की थी। वामपंथी पार्टियों को उन धर्मनिरपेक्ष संगठनों और व्यक्तियों से भी सबक लेने की ज़रूरत है, जो राजनीति से इतर क्षेत्रों में सांप्रदायिकता के खिलाफ संघर्ष कर रहे हैं। गुजरात और कंधमाल में अल्पसंख्यकों के अधिकारों की रक्षा के लिए किया जा रहा संघर्ष, धर्मनिरपेक्ष मूल्यों को बढ़ावा देने वाले अभियान, विविधता और बहुलता को प्रोत्साहित करने वाले सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम व आम लोगों में धर्मनिरपेक्षता की अवधारणा की समझ विकसित करने के प्रयास-इन सब ने सांप्रदायिकता के दानव से मुकाबला करने में महती भूमिका निभाई है।

सांप्रदायिक मानसिकता और पूर्वाग्रह, जो कि समाज की सामूहिक सोच का हिस्सा बन गए हैं, से मुकाबला करने के लिए बहुलता और सौहार्द को बढ़ावा देने वाले सांस्कृतिक अभियान चलाए जाना आवश्यक हैं। जहां हाशिए पर पड़े वर्गों को साथ लिए जाने की ज़रूरत है, वहीं धार्मिक अल्पसंख्यकों से जुड़े मुद्दों को उठाना भी उतना ही आवश्यक है। महिलाओं, जातिप्रथा, आदिवासियों व अन्य वंचित व पिछड़े वर्गों से जुड़े मुद्दों पर फोकस करने का मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी का निर्णय स्वागतयोग्य है परंतु इसके साथ ही, वामपंथियों को यह भी सुनिश्चित करना चाहिए कि हिंदू राष्ट्रवाद के पैरोकारों को चुनावी मैदान में पराजित किया जाए। हमें यह कभी नहीं भूलना चाहिए कि चुनाव में विजय से सांप्रदायिक ताकतों के आभामंडल में वृद्धि होती है। वामपंथियों को ऐसी पार्टियों, जो भारतीय राष्ट्रवाद की हामी हैं, के साथ चुनावी गठबंधन करने पर भी विचार करना चाहिए, भले ही इन पार्टियों में कुछ कमियां हों। यदि वामपंथी पार्टियां ऐसा करेंगी तो निश्चित तौर पर उन्हें अपनी पुरानी नीतियों और सोच में परिवर्तन लाना होगा। परंतु ऐसा करना आज के समय की मांग हैं। (मूल अंग्रेजी से हिन्दी रूपांतरण अमरीश हरदेनिया) (लेखक आई.आई.टी. मुंबई में पढ़ाते थे और सन् 2007 के नेशनल कम्यूनल हार्मोनी एवार्ड से सम्मानित हैं।)

लखनऊ 14 जनवरी 2016। रिहाई मंच ने आठ साल सात महीने कैद में रहने के बाद देशद्रोह के आरोप से दोषमुक्त अजीर्जुरहमान, मो0 अली अकबर, नौशाद, नूर इस्लाम व शेख मुख्तार हुसैन की रिहाई को वादा खिलाफ सपा सरकार के मुंह पर तमाचा बताया। मंच ने देशद्रोह और यूएपीए को बेगुनाहों को फंसाने का पुलिसिया हथियार बताते हुए इसे खत्म करने की मांग की है। 

रिहाई मंच के अध्यक्ष मुहम्मद शुऐब ने कहा कि 2012 में आतंकवाद के आरोप में कैद निर्दोषों को छोड़ने के नाम पर आई सपा सरकार ने अपना वादा अगर पूरा किया होता तो पहले ही बेगुनाह छूट गए होते। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार ने वादा किया था कि आतंक के आरोपों से बरी हुए लोगों को मुआवजा व पुर्नवास किया जाएगा पर खुद अखिलेश सरकार अब तक अपने शासन काल में दोषमुक्त हुए किसी भी व्यक्ति को न मुआवजा दिया न पुर्नवास किया। मुख्यमंत्री अखिलेश यादव को डर है कि अगर आतंक के आरोपों से बरी लोगों को मुआवजा व पुर्नवास करेंगे तो उनका हिन्दुत्वादी वोट बैंक उनके खिलाफ हो जाएगा। पुर्नवास व मुआवजा न देना साबित करता है कि अखिलेश यादव हिन्दुत्वादी चश्मे से बेगुनाहों को आतंकवादी ही समझते हैं। बेगुनाहों की रिहाई के मामले में वादाखिलाफी करने वाले आखिलेश यादव अब अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट करेंगे या फिर 2012 के चुनावी घोषणा पत्र की तरह फिर बेगुनाहों को रिहा करने का झूठा वादा करेंगे। मंच के अध्यक्ष मुहम्मद शुऐब ने कहा कि आज दोष मुक्त हुए तीन युवक पश्चिम बंगाल से हैं ऐसे में जब अखिलेश यादव पुर्नवास व मुआवजा की गारंटी नहीं कर रहे हैं तो पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी को इनके सम्मान सहित पुर्नवास की गांरटी देनी चाहिए।

रिहाई मंच प्रवक्ता राजीव यादव ने बताया कि 12 अगस्त 2008 को लखनऊ कोर्ट परिसर में रिहाई मंच के अध्यक्ष मुहम्मद शुऐब को आतंकवाद का केस न लड़ने के लिए हिन्दुत्वादी जेहनियत वाले अधिवक्ताओं द्वारा मारने-पीटने के बाद उल्टे मुहम्मद शुऐब व आतंकवाद के आरोप में कैद अजीर्जुरहमान, मो0 अली अकबर, नूर इस्लाम, नौशाद व शेख मुख्तार हुसैन के खिलाफ हिन्दुस्तान मुर्दाबाद-पाकिस्तान जिन्दाबाद के नारे लगाने का झूठा आरोप लगाया गया था। लखनऊ की एक स्पेशल कोर्ट ने आज आईपीसी की धारा 114, 109, 147, 124 ए (देशद्रोह) और 153 ए के तहत अभियुक्त बनाए गए अजीर्जुरहमान, मो0 अली अकबर, नौशाद, नूर इस्लाम व शेख मुख्तार हुसैन को दोषमुक्त किया है। नवंबर 2007 में यूपी की कचहरियों में हुए धमाकों के बाद जब आतंकवाद का केस न लड़ने व किसी अधिवक्ता को न लड़ने देने का फरमान अधिवक्ताओं के बार एशोसिएशनों ने जारी किए थे उस वक्त अधिवक्ता मुहम्मद शुऐब ने इसे संविधान प्रदत्त अधिकारों पर हमला और अदालती प्रक्रिया का माखौल बनाना बताते हुए आतंकवाद के आरोपों में कैद बेगुनाहों का मुकदमा लड़ना शुरु किया था। जनवरी 2007 में कोलकाता के आफताब आलम अंसारी कि मात्र 22 दिनों में रिहाई से शुरु हुई बेगुनाहों की इस लड़ाई में मुहम्मद शुऐब और उनके अधिवक्ता साथियों पर प्रदेश की विभिन्न कचहरियों में हमले हुए। पर ऐसी किसी भी घटना से विचलित न होते हुए रिहाई मंच के अध्यक्ष मुहम्मद शुऐब अब तक दर्जन भर से अधिक आतंकवाद के आरोप में कैद बेगुनाहों को छुड़ा चुके हैं। 

मंच के प्रवक्ता ने कहा कि इंसाफ की इस लड़ाई में हम सभी ने अधिवक्ता शाहिद आजमी, मौलाना खालिद मुजाहिद समेत कईयों को खोया है पर इस लड़ाई में न सिर्फ बेगुनाह छूट रहे हैं बल्कि देश की सुख शांति के खिलाफ साजिश करने वाली खुफिया-सुरक्षा एजेंसियों की हकीकत भी सामने आ रही है। उन्होनें बताया कि इस मुकदमें से बरी हुए अजीर्जुरहमान, मो0 अली अकबर हुसैन, नौशाद, नूर इस्लाम, शेख मुख्तार हुसैन के अलावां जलालुद्दीन जिनपर हूजी आतंकी का आरोप लगाया गया था अदालत द्वारा अक्टूबर 2015 में पहले ही निर्दोष घोषित किए जा चुके हैं। जून 2007 में इनके साथ ही यूपी के नासिर और याकूब की भी गिरफ्तारी हुई थी जिन्हें भी अदालत दोषमुक्त कर चुकी है। जून 2007 में लखनऊ में आतंकी हमले का षडयंत्र रचने वाले सभी आरोपी जब बरी हो चुके हैं तो इस घटना पर तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री मायावती को अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट करनी चाहिए। यहां गौर की बात है कि 2007 में मायावती और राहुल गांधी पर आतंकी हमले के नाम पर मुस्लिम लड़कों को झूठे आरोपों में न सिर्फ पकड़ा गया बल्कि 23 दिसबंर 2007 को मायावती को मारने आने के नाम पर दो कश्मीरी शाल बेचने वालों का चिनहट में फर्जी मुठभेड़ किया गया। ऐसे में आतंकवाद की राजनीति के तहत फंसाए गए इन युवकों पर राहुल और मायावती को अपना मुंह खोलना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि इन सभी घटनाओं के दौरान विक्रम सिंह जहां डीजीपी थे तो वहीं बृजलाल एडीजी कानून व्यवस्था ऐसे में इन झूठे आरोपों की जांच सुप्रीम कोर्ट के सिटिंग जज की निगरानी में की जाए। 

नागरिक परिषद के रामकृष्ण ने कहा कि पुलिस के झूठे आरोपों के चलते तकरीबन आठ साल जेल में रखकर न सिर्फ इन बेगुनाहों के खिलाफ षडयंत्र किया गया बल्कि मुल्क के खिलाफ भी। सांप्रदायिक जेहनियत की खुफिया और पुलिस विभाग के चलते देश के नागरिकों के बीच वैमनश्यता बढ़ाने की साजिश की गई। आज जब सभी आरोपी बरी हो चुके हैं तो देश में सांप्रदायिक सौहार्द खराब करने का मुकदमा दोषी पुलिस व खुफिया अधिकारियों पर किया जाए। आठ सालों से इन बेगुनाहों व इनके परिवार को जो शारीरिक-मानसिक व आर्थिक हानि हुई है और झूठा केस बनाने के नाम पर सरकारी धन का जो दुरुपयोग हुआ है, उसे दोषी पुलिस व खुफिया अधिकारियों से वसूला जाए।

'जनवादी समाज और जाति का उन्मूलन' की भूमिका: आनंद तेलतुंबड़े

जाने-माने जनवादी अधिकार कार्यकर्ता और चिंतक आनंद तेलतुंबड़े ने यह भूमिका आधार प्रकाशन से रुबीना सैफी के संपादन में प्रकाशित हुई अपनी किताब जनवादी समाज और जाति का उन्मूलनके लिए लिखी है. किताब में शामिल निबंध जाति के उन्मूलन को एक केंद्रीय कार्यभार के रूप में देखते हुए एक सच्चे जनवादी समाज के निर्माण की चुनौतियों, संघर्षों, वैचारिकी और जरूरत को रेखांकित करते हैं. अनुवाद: रेयाज उल हक
 
मुझे युवा अध्येता रूबीना सैफी द्वारा तैयार किए गए इस संकलन की भूमिका लिखते हुए बहुत खुशी हो रही है, जिसके निबंध मैंने अलग अलग वक्त में अलग अलग विषयों पर लिखे हैं लेकिन वे किसी न किसी तरीके से जाति के सवाल के साथ जुड़े हुए हैं. ये मूल लेख अंग्रेजी में हैं और पढ़नेवालों के एक बड़े तबके के लिए वे यहां हिंदी में पेश किए जा रहे हैं. 

जाति को लेकर मेरा नजरिया ज्यादातर लोगों और स्थापित बौद्धिक जमात से बहुत अलग है, और इसीलिए वर्ग को लेकर मेरा नजरिया भी अलग है. बुनियादी तौर पर मैं इन दोनों अवधारणाओं को आपस में एक दूसरे से अलग अलग करके देखने के रुझान में समस्याएं पाता हूं. खास तौर से बौद्धिक बहसों में जाति और वर्ग का इस कदर अलग अलग होना मुझे उलझन में डालता है. मार्क्सवादी सिद्धांत में वर्ग, इतिहास में द्वंद्ववाद को आगे बढ़ाने की एक अवधारणात्मक श्रेणी थे. इस खांचे में जातियों को कैसे और कहां समोया जा सकता था? वे कैसे एक साथ वजूद में रह सकती हैं? इसी तरह मैं आंबेडकर द्वारा जातियों की जड़ को हिंदू धर्मशास्त्रों में देखने और धर्म बदल लेने के उनके समाधान को लेकर भी बेचैनी महसूस करता हूं. मुझे इस पर हैरानी थी कि आंबेडकर ने कम्युनिस्टों के इस दावे के लिए सामान मुहैया कराया कि जातियां महज ऊपरी ढांचे का हिस्सा थीं. आंबेडकर वाजिब ही कम्युनिस्टों से परेशान थे कि उन्होंने जातियों के सवाल को नजरअंदाज किया और क्रांति को लेकर अड़े हुए थे. लेकिन जब आंबेडकर ने अपनी जाति-विरोधी दलील को पेश किया, तो अनजाने में ही, उनकी दलील ने कम्युनिस्टों की मदद की. यह सब तो एक बात, आखिर जाति कैसे बस हिंदू धर्मशास्त्रों में ही हो सकती है, या फिर हिंदू धर्म की तरकीब हो सकती है? अगर ऐसा है तो भारत के दूसरे धर्मों में जातियों के वजूद को कैसे समझा जा सकता है? मैं इस खयाल को हजम नहीं कर पाया कि किसी एक इंसान ने कुछ लिख दिया और समाज उसके आधार पर ढल गया. जातियों के पैदा होने की कुछ भौतिक वजह होनी चाहिए. धर्म के आधार पर विचारधारा इसको कायम रखने में अपना योगदान दे सकती है, लेकिन यकीनन यह इसे पैदा नहीं कर सकती.

शुरू-शुरू में मुझे अपने नजरिए के लिए आंबेडकरियों और मार्क्सवादियों दोनों से ही खासे विरोध का सामना करना पड़ा. आंबेडकरी मार्क्सवाद की अपनी सतही धारणाओं के साथ आसानी से मुझे मार्क्सवादी करार देते थे. मार्क्सवादियों को उतना सतही होने की भी जरूरत नहीं थी, उनके लिए मेरा दलित होना ही मुझसे आंबेडकरी के रूप में पेश आने के लिए काफी था. यह एक ऐसा नसीब है, जो भारत में हरेक प्रगतिशील दलित कार्यकर्ता के हिस्से आता है. आप हमेशा ही जाति के खोखल में वापस फेंक दिए जाते हैं या फिर आपको जाति से बाहर कर दिया जाता है, उसी तरह जैसे जातियां बुनियादी तौर पर काम करती हैं. इसने भी इसे साबित किया कि भारतीय समाज में अभी भी कितना जहर है कि मार्क्सवादी भी इससे बचे नहीं रह सकते. यह बुश की उस दलील से मिलती जुलती है, कि या तो आप हमारे साथ हैं या फिर हमारे खिलाफ. इसके लिए दलितों को माफ किया जा सकता था, पहली बात तो इसलिए कि मार्क्सवादियों के उलट वे अपने को राह दिखाने वाले किसी महान सिद्धांत का दावा नहीं करते और दूसरी कि वे शासक वर्गों द्वारा की जा रही हर तरह की सियासी धांधलियों से महफूज नहीं हैं.

लेकिन इन सबसे मुझे फिक्र नहीं हुई; क्योंकि मैं जानता था कि मैं क्या था. इसके उलट, इस पूरे दौरान मुझे इन वादों के बारे गंभीर संदेह पैदा होने लगे, जो अपने मानने वालों में पहचान पर आधारित पूर्वाग्रहों का जहर भरने के अलावा कोई काम नहीं करते. मैंने अनेक ऐसे लोगों को देखा है, जो पक्के आंबेडकरी होने का दावा करते थे, मगर लेकिन जिन्होंने असल में आंबेडकर की लिखी हुई एक भी किताब नहीं पढ़ी है. और इसी तरह मैं ऐसे मार्क्सवादियों को जानता हूं (अब वे महज मार्क्सवादी ही नहीं हैं, वे मार्क्सवादी-लेनिनवादी और माओवादी हैं) जो इसी तरह से मार्क्सवाद के बुनियादी उसूलों से अनजान हैं. यह इन संभावित क्रांतिकारी आंदोलनों के लिए हंसी के काबिल, लेकिन साथ ही त्रासदी भरी हुई हालत है (हालांकि आंबेडकरी शायद इसे क्रांति कहें या न कहें, लेकिन जातियों का उन्मूलन भारत में किसी क्रांति से कम नहीं है) कि वे अपनी नादानी पर फिदा होने वाली खोखली पहचानों में सिमट कर रह गए हैं. बेशक, दोनों तरफ ऐसे लोग हैं जो अपने क्रांतिकारी वायदों को लेकर काफी संजीदा हैं लेकिन वे अपने चारों ओर मौजूद, पहचान पर काम करने वाली भीड़ में दब गए हैं. मेरा लिखी हुई रचनाओं का अनुवाद होता है, उन पर जवाब आते हैं और उनके आधार पर आगे चीजें लिखी जाती हैं, यह तथ्य दिखाता है कि उन्हें नजरअंदाज नहीं किया जा सकता. और फिर बोहेमियाई खुशफहमियों के हाथों बिक चुके नौजवानों के उस बड़े से नवउदारवादी हिस्से को अलग कर देने के बाद भी, नौजवानों की एक बढ़ती हुई आबादी है, जो अपने भविष्य को लेकर बहुत उलझन में है. यह आबादी मेरी बातों को सुनती हुई लगती है. इस नजरिए से, मुझे महसूस होता है कि यह किताब मेरे विचारों को समझने में और भी मदद करेगी.

जाति और वर्ग पर मेरी समझदारी न तो प्रयोगों से पैदा हुई है और न ही किताबों से. अपनी सार्वजनिक सक्रियता (एक्टिविज्म) के जरिए भी जाति के सवाल पर सोचना मैंने काफी बाद में शुरू किया. हालांकि मैं एक दलित के रूप में पैदा हुआ था, लेकिन दूसरों के उलट मुझे अपने बचपन में जाति के कड़वे अनुभवों का सामना नहीं हुआ हालांकि दलितों का ढांचागत अलगाव दूसरे किसी भी गांव की तरह मेरे गांव में भी था. दलितों और गैर-दलितों को एक सड़क अलग करती थी, जो आगे चल कर खेतों से होते हुए एक पतली सी पगडंडी में बदल जाती और दो खेतों के बाद दलितों के एक कुएं तक और फिर आखिर में एक दूसरे गांव तक ले जाती थी. हालांकि दलितों और दूसरों के बीच आपसी रिश्तों में यह कोई मायने नहीं रखता था. लोगों ने शायद इस बात को अपने अंदर जज्ब कर लिया था कि उन्हें क्या करना है और वे अपनी अपनी दुनिया के दायरों में जी रहे थे. 

अब मैं पीछे मुड़ कर देखता हूं तो लगता है कि इसकी बड़ी वजह गांव की अजीबोगरीब राजनीतिक अर्थव्यवस्था थी. यह गांव कोयले, चूनापत्थर, डोलोमाइट वगैरह से भरपूर था, यहां देश की सबसे पुरानी कोयले की खदानों में से एक खदान थी, हालांकि यह मेरे पूरे बचपन के दौरान बंद रही थी. दूसरी तरफ यहां दो दर्जन चूना भट्ठियां थीं और उनके लिए चूनापत्थर का खनन होता था. पूरा इलाका गतिविधियों से भरपूर था. सबसे अहम तथ्य ये था कि कोलियरी की वजह से मुख्य गांव से दोएक किलोमीटर दूर एक महानगरीय आबादी वाला एक औद्योगिक कस्बा (टाउनशिप) विकसित हो गया था, जिसमें देश के करीब-करीब सभी इलाकों से आए लोग रहते थे, लेकिन उनमें दलित आबादी सबसे ज्यादा थी. यहां तक कि हमारे गांव से भी ज्यादातर दलित मर्द और औरतें दोनों, चूना कारखानों और चूनापत्थर की खदानों में काम करते थे. इस तरह दूसरे गांवों के उलट, यहां के दलित अपने गुजर-बसर के लिए कुनबी किसानों पर निर्भर नहीं थे. इसके उलट, दलितों को हर हफ्ते नकद मजदूरी मिलने के कारण वे ज्यादातर किसानों से बेहतर हालत में दिखते थे, जिनके पास नकद रकम सिर्फ अपनी पैदावार बेचने के बाद ही आती थी. सूखी जमीन पर खेती के कारण वैसे भी आमदनी कम ही थी. इसका असर दलितों और गैर-दलितों के बीच रिश्तों में दिखता था, जिन्हें किसी न किसी रिश्ते के नाम से ही बुलाया जाता था, जैसे कि मामा, काका (चाचा), आजा, आजी (दादा, दादी) वगैरह.

इसके बजाए, मेरे बचपन का अनुभव अपने आसपास की गैरबराबरी को लेकर बेचैनी वाला था. गांव में भी, जहां कोई भी बहुत अच्छी हालत में नहीं था, कुछ लोगों के पक्के घर थे जो अपने चूने से रंगी दीवारों के साथ आस पास की मिट्टी की झोंपड़ियों के बीच अलग ही दिखते थे. इन कुछ घरों को छोड़ कर, जो सड़क के दोनों और स्थित थे, दलितों और दूसरों के घरों के बीच कोई खास फर्क नहीं था. घरों के अलावा, ज्यादातर लोगों के पास मवेशी थे, जिन्हें मैं गांव के किसी भी बच्चे की तरह पसंद करता था, लेकिन हमारे पास एक भी जानवर नहीं था. असल में हमारा परिवार अकेला परिवार था, जिसके पास न जमीन थी न जानवर. अपनी मां से मैं भोलेपन से पूछता कि हमारे पास कोई बकरी क्यों नहीं है और फिर इसकी मांग करते हुए आसमान सिर पर उठा लेता कि वो अभी के अभी मेरे लिए एक बकरी लेकर आएं. किसी तरह वो जवाब देने की कोशिश करतीं लेकिन जल्दी ही वो सब्र खो देतीं और मुझे पीटने लगतीं. न तो उनकी पिटाई ने मुझे उन सवालों को उठाने से रोका और न ही उनके जवाब मुझे कायल कर पाए.

जवाब का इंतजार करते उन सभी सवालों का एक दिन अचानक ही जवाब मिल गया, या शायद ऐसा मुझे लगा, जब मुझे अपनी तीसरी कक्षा में अव्वल आने पर मुझे ईनाम में एक किताब दी गई. असल में मैं बीमार होने की वजह से परीक्षा ही नहीं दे सका था, लेकिन मेरे शिक्षकों को इससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ा. इम्तहान दूं या न दूं, मेरे लिए अव्वल जगह तय थी. ईनाम में मिली हुई किताब जोसेफ स्तालिन की मराठी जीवनी थी. यहां तक कि जिस शिक्षक ने तहसील के कस्बे की अकेली दुकान से वह किताब खरीदी थी, उसे भी इसका अंदाजा नहीं था कि वह क्या थी. यह उनके लिए बस एक किताब थी, जो स्कूल के रिवाज के मुताबिक इनाम में देने के लिए उनके बजट के भीतर थी. लेकिन मेरे हाथ में यह किताब एक बम का गोला बन जानेवाली थी. एक तरह से इसने मुझे भीतर तक इस कदर बिखेर दिया कि अब मैं वह पहले वाला बच्चा नहीं रह गया. मैंने उस किताब को पढ़ा और बार बार पढ़ा. स्तालिन की शख्सियत बहुत असरअंदाज थी, लेकिन मार्क्सवाद, समाजवाद, साम्यवाद और रूस में बोल्शेविक क्रांति जैसे एकदम नए शब्दों ने मुझे बांध लिया. एक झटके में मुझे महसूस हुआ कि मेरे सारे सवालों के जवाब हासिल हो गए. आठ साल की नाजुक उम्र में, मैंने मार्क्सवाद, साम्यवाद और रूसी क्रांति के बारे में जानकारी खोजनी शुरू कर दी. जब भी मैं शहर में अपने चाचा के घर जाता, मैं उन्हें सुत्रवे बुक सेलर के यहां खींच ले जाता, जो अपनी छोटी सी गुमटी में अपना किताबों और कैलेंडरों का सौदा फैलाए रहते. वे बुजुर्ग मेरी मांगें सुन कर हैरान होते. लेकिन उन्होंने मेरे चाचा के जरिए मुझे किताबें भेजनी शुरू कर दीं. मैंने सोचा कि मैं कम्युनिस्ट बन चुका था जिसका मिशन भारत में एक ऐसी क्रांति लाना थी, जिसमें सभी बच्चों के पास चूना पुती दीवारों वाले पक्के मकान, उनके अपने खेत, अपनी बकरियां, गाएं और भैंसे और बेशक बहुत सारी मुर्गियां होंगी.

अगले साल मैंने भगत सिंह के बारे में पढ़ा, जिन्होंने फौरन मेरे नायक के रूप में स्तालिन की जगह ले ली. मैंने कल्पना से उनकी एक तस्वीर बनाई और उसका शीर्षक रखा 'भारत रत्न शहीद भगत सिंह', जो मेरे स्कूल छोड़ने के बरसों बाद भी स्कूल के दफ्तर में सजा रहा. यह तब की बात है, जब मैंने नहीं जाना था कि 'भारत रत्न'एक सरकारी सम्मान है. यह हमेशा एक प्रेरणा देने वाले शहीद के लिए मेरी तस्दीक थी, जिसका मेरे नायक के रूप में रुतबा आज कर जस का तस बना हुआ है.

जाति के साथ मेरी मुलाकात गांव में एक अनोखी घटना से हुई, जिसमें मेरी मां ने एक नायक जैसी भूमिका निभाई थी. एक शाम, जब वे पीने का पानी लाने के लिए हमारे कुएं पर गईं, तो औरतों के बीच हलचल थी जिन्होंने पानी पर गंदगी तैरती हुई देखी थी. ऐसा शक किया गया कि कुनबी परिवार के बच्चों ने यह हरकत की थी, जो उस खेत के मालिक थे, जिनमें हमारा कुआं था. शायद उन्होंने सोचा होगा कि दलित लोग कुएं का इस्तेमाल बंद कर देंगे, और तब यह कुआं उनका हो जाएगा और खेतों की सिंचाई करने के काम आएगा. मेरी मां अभी अभी खेतों में हाड़तोड़ मेहनत करके लौटी थी. वो आगबबूला हो गईं और उन्होंने औरतों को कहा कि वे उनके साथ गांव में सवर्णों के कुएं तक चलें. आशंका के मुताबिक, कुछ कुनबी औरतों ने इसका विरोध किया और दलित औरतों के घड़े फेंक दिए. मेरी मां ने उनमें से एक को पीट कर उन्हें डरा कर भगा दिया और पानी लाने के लिए कुएं तक पहुंच गईं. खबर फैली कि महार औरतों ने कुएं को गंदा कर दिया है और कुछ आगे बढ़े हुए कुनबियों ने इसका विरोध करने के लिए लोगों को जमा किया. 

अगली सुबह जब मेरी मां दलित औरतों को लेकर कुएं से पानी लाने गईं तो वहां मर्दों की भीड़ लगी हुई थी. उन्होंने रोकने की कोशिश की लेकिन दलित औरतों के चेहरों पर चुनौती के भाव देख कर वे पीछे हट गए. कुछ झड़प हुई, लेकिन दलित औरतों को जीत हासिल हुई. इसने गांव में एक साफ-साफ तनाव पैदा कर दिया. ऐसी अफवाहें थीं कि कुनबी लोग दलितों पर हमले करेंगे. उस शाम दलितों की एक बैठक बुलाई गई. हम बच्चे लड़ाई लड़ने का मौका मिलने से खासे उत्साहित थे. लेकिन मर्द लोग डरे हुए थे. उनमें से कुछ ने सिर पर आ खड़ी हुई इस मुसीबत के लिए औरतों को दोष देने की कोशिश की. लेकिन मेरी मां की चुनौती को देख कर और दूसरी औरतों द्वारा उनके साथ खड़े होने की वजह से वे पीछे हट गए. हालांकि मैं दूसरे बच्चों के साथ इस बहस को देख रहा था, लेकिन मैं अपनी ब्रिगेड का नेतृत्व करने का मौका मिलने की कल्पना में खो चुका था. बैठक के बाद, हमने पास के मैदान से पत्थर जमा करने, घरों से लोहे के सरिए और छुरियां निकालने और तैयार रहने का फैसला किया. हमने अपनी फॉर्मेशन तय की और जिम्मेवारियां आपस में बांट लीं यानी जंग की रणनीति तय हो गई.

लेकिन कोई भी हम पर हमला करने नहीं आया. अगली सुबह गांव के कोलियरी वाले हिस्से में खबर भेजी गई, जहां दलित कहीं ज्यादा संगठित और जुझारू थे. कुछ नौजवान महिलाएं एक समूह में आईं और पानी भरने जा रही हमारी गांव की औरतों की हिफाजत में खड़ी रहीं. कुनबी लोग पास फटकने से भी डर रहे थे. दोपहर बाद कोलियरी के अनेक लोगों के साथ एक बैठक हुई, जिसमें तय किया गया कि जिला आरपीआई के नेता को बुलाया जाए और इस मुद्दे पर एक बड़ी जनसभा की जाए. इस बीच, महारों को कोलियरी से मिली मदद से डरे हुए कुनबी इस मामले को दोस्ताना तरीके से सुलझाना चाहते थे. यह तय किया गया कि वे दलितों को तब तक कुएं से पानी लेने देंगे, जब तक हमारे कुएं की सफाई नहीं हो जाती, जो इसके फौरन बाद कर दी गई. लेकिन दलित गांव में साफ साफ तनाव बना रहा, क्योंकि उन्हें डर था कि कुनबी लोग हालात के सामान्य होने के बाद अपनी बेइज्जती का बदला ले सकते हैं. इस पूरे दौरान कोलियरी के नौजवान मर्दों और औरतों की एक टोली अक्सर हमारे गांव का दौरा करती रही, जिसकी वजह से कुनबियों को सुलह-सफाई का रुख अपनाना पड़ा था. जैसा कि तय किया गया था, एक बड़ी भारी जनसभा हुई जिसमें आरपीआई के जिला अध्यक्ष मि. सोंडावले आए थे. हिंदू धर्म की निंदा करते हुए और जातिवादी कुनबियों को धमकाते हुए ढेरों भाषण दिए गए. बात में ग्राम पंचायत द्वारा गांव के हमारे हिस्से में एक सार्वजनिक कुआं बनाने का फैसला किया गया, जिसका उपयोग सभी जातियों द्वारा होना था. यह वो घटना थी, जिसने जाति नाम के शैतान से मेरी भेंट करवाई. 

लेकिन इस मुलाकात में जातियों का सताने वाला पहलू शामिल नहीं था. यह बात समझ में आई कि जिन लोगों को कुनबी कहा जाता है, उन लोगों से हम अलग थे और अलग रहते थे. इतना ही. कमतर होने का कोई खयाल नहीं था. जाति के साथ इस मुठभेड़ में अगर ऐसा कुछ था भी तो यह था कि जीतनेवाले हम थे. कुनबियों को झुकते हुए पूरे गांव के एक आम कुएं पर आने के लिए मान जाना पड़ा था. स्कूल में पढ़ाई-लिखाई में अच्छा प्रदर्शन करने की वजह से मेरा सम्मान था, हालांकि मेरे अजीबोगरीब व्यवहार से कुछ शिक्षकों द्वारा खास तौर से मुझे पसंद नहीं करते थे. उन दिनों एक बोर्ड के तहत आनेवाले स्कूलों के बीच एक होड़ होती था. चौथी और सातवीं कक्षाओं के लिए इम्तहान बोर्ड द्वारा किसी बड़े गांव में लिए जाते थे. अगर किसी गांव का छात्र बोर्ड में अव्वल आता तो यह उसके लिए बड़ी इज्जत की बात होती थी. चूंकि मैं अपने गांव के लिए यह सम्मान ला सकता था, इसलिए पूरा गांव मेरा आदर करता था. इससे भी आगे बढ़ कर कुछ कुनबी परिवार हमें मट्ठा, दही, घी और खेती की कुछ उपज दे जाते, क्योंकि हमारे परिवार के पास कोई जमीन या मवेशी नहीं थे. शायद इसमें गांव में जातियों की आपसी निर्भरता की झलक मिलती थी.

जाति के साथ मेरी मुलाकात में रत्ती भर भी कमतरी का खयाल जुड़ा हुआ नहीं था. अपने गांव के स्कूल से सातवीं पास करने के बाद जब मैं शहर में उच्च विद्यालय में गया, तो मैं चाचा के घर में रहने लगा. यह घर स्कूलों के झुंड की ओर ले जाने वाली एक सड़क के किनारे था, जिस पर कुछ ब्राह्मण लड़के चलते थे. उन्हें रोक कर उनसे 'आंबेडकर की जय'बुलवाना हमारा खेल हुआ करता था. बेचारे लड़के मान जाते और तंग किए जाने से बच जाते. बाद में, वे सड़क के उस हिस्से से दौड़ कर भाग जाते और कुछ तो एक लंबा रास्ता पकड़ लेते और उस सड़क से ही आने से बचते. उच्च विद्यालय में हमें ब्राह्मण बच्चों के खिलाफ एक सीधी लडाई लड़नी पड़ी, जिन्हें आरएसएस की काली टोपियां पहनने की इजाजत थी, जो स्कूली पोशाक का उल्लंघन थी. जब मैं दसवीं में पहुंचा और तब तक पढ़ाई-लिखाई में अच्छे प्रदर्शन के चलते मेरा कहना मानने वाले बच्चों की एक बड़ी तादाद हो गई थी, एक दिन हमने दलित छात्रों को सुबह की प्रार्थनाओं में नीली टोपियां पहनाईं. इस पर पीटी टीचर द्वारा आपत्ति जताई गई, जो खुद भी एक दलित थे. लेकिन हमने उन्हें चुनौती दी. मुसलमान हेडमास्टर ने हमसे बातचीत की और वादा किया कि वे ब्राह्मण अभिभावकों से अपने बच्चों को सिर्फ स्कूली पोशाक पहना कर भेजने को कहेंगे. इसके बाद जल्दी ही, काली टोपियां गायब हो गईं. जाति के साथ ऐसे अनुभव थे, जो मेरे बचपन के इस 'कम्युनिस्ट'भरोसे से मेल खाते थे कि अगर हमने संघर्ष किया तो हम जीत सकते हैं.

इस पूरे दौरान, आंबेडकर एक मिथक थे, जिनके बारे में कोई जानकारी नहीं थी, सिवाय उन गीतों के जो कुछ उत्सवों के मौकों पर लाउडस्पीकरों पर जोर जोर से बजते थे. सिर्फ नागपुर पहुंचने बाद ही मैं यूनिवर्सिटी के पुस्तकालय में उनकी किताबें पढ़ पाया. इस पढ़ाई के साथ साथ होस्टलों में साथी छात्रों के साथ होने वाले भेदभाव की कहानियों ने मुझे जाति के बारे में, और आंबेडकर और मार्क्स के आपस में एक दूसरे की जगह लेने वाले नजरियों के बारे में सोचने पर मजबूर किया जिसके दौरान जाति को बार बार वर्ग के बरअक्स खड़ा करके देखता. तभी मुझे उन तरीकों में कुछ गलत होने का हल्का-हल्का अहसास होने लगा था जिनके तहत जाति और वर्ग के खिलाफ लड़ाइयों को एक दूसरे के समांतर रखा जाता है, जबकि व्यापक तौर पर उनके विषय एक दूसरे में शामिल थे. इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ साइंस में अपनी पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेज में पहुंचने के बाद मैंने अपने होस्टल में, एक दूसरे से पूरी तरह अलग थलग रहने वाले दूसरे छात्रों के साथ दो स्टडी सर्किल शुरू किए, एक स्टडी सर्किल में मार्क्स पर विचार किया जाता और दूसरे में आंबेडकर पर. हम हफ्ते में एक बार मिलते, जब मैं इन लोगों की किसी रचना की व्याख्या करता और इसके बाद बहस होती. मैं वहां अपने नजरिए को परखना चाहता, लेकिन मैं निराश हो जाता क्योंकि उन्हें चुनौती देने वाला वहां कोई नहीं था. नक्सलवादी आंदोलन आम चर्चा में था और अखबारों से रोज ही कोई न कोई खबर या नजरिया सामने आता.

मैंने सोचा कि बेकार ही बौद्धिक की तरह लगने के बजाए, आत्मकथात्मक लगने का जोखिम उठाते हुए यह लंबी भूमिका एक गांव के एक बच्चे के रोज-ब-रोज के आम अनुभवों की दुनिया में वर्ग और जाति के आपसी मेल-जोल को देखने का शायद बेहतर तरीका होगी. मैं सार्वजनिक रूप से अपने बारे में बोलने से बचता हूं कि कहीं यह एक और दलित जीवनी न बन जाए जो हमेशा ही लेखक की अपनी शख्सियत को सामने लाने के लिए सामाजिक पहलू पर हावी हो जाती है. मेरी नजर में यह छोटा सा ब्योरा इसके बारे में समझाता है कि जाति और वर्ग के बारे में मेरे विचारों के बीज कैसे पड़े और कैसे हालात ने उन्हें एक खास तरीके से ढाला. यह आलोचनात्मक सोच की भूमिका को देखने में मदद कर सकती है.

मैं नहीं जानता कि रूबीना ने किस आधार पर इन निबंधों को चुना है. ये मुझे खासे बेतरतीब लगे. लेकिन उन्होंने जिस भी आधार पर इन्हें चुना हो, ये इस मायने में कारगर हैं कि एक परिचय के रूप में यह संकलन जाति और वर्ग के संबंध में अनेक मुद्दों पर मेरे नजरिए का एक जायजा पेश करता है. मैं उनके और विस्तार में जाने के उकसावे में पड़ने से खुद को रोकूंगा और पाठकों को खुद फैसला करने के लिए इसे उन्हीं पर छोड़ देना पसंद करूंगा. इस पहलकदमी के लिए मुझे रूबीना का और तारीफ के काबिल इस अनुवाद के लिए रेयाज का जरूर ही शुक्रिया अदा करना चाहिए.
